Harrisburg, Pennsylvania: Historic State Capital near Chocolate Empire

The midsize city of Harrisburg has played a part in key moments in US history: it was the site of several Civil War battles, as well as a rail and transportation hub during the Industrial Revolution. The National Civil War Museum chronicles the war from both the Southern and Northern perspectives, housing more than 12,000 artifacts including Robert E. Lee's pocket Bible and Ulysses S. Grant's sword belt. The Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex—which Teddy Roosevelt once praised as "the handsomest" he'd ever seen—is also worth a stop. You can take a guided tours around the Beaux Arts building, which was constructed in 1902.

Nearby Hershey bills itself as "The Sweetest Place on Earth," and it's hard to dispute that claim—the whole town smells like chocolate. Rags-to-riches entrepreneur Milton Hershey founded Hershey in 1903 as a company town for his factory workers. These days, it's at the center of a confection empire where you’ll find candy-themed amusement parks and museums. At Hersheypark®, you can ride 13 roller coasters and float in inner tubes down a lazy river. Next door, the Hershey’s Chocolate World trolley tour takes passengers to Milton Hershey's boyhood home and the mansion he built across from his factory.

No after hours staff available to help in the event of an emergency It’s a beautiful resort, clean rooms, excellent dining…… but…I was locked out of my room at 0545 am when I went to make coffee in the common area.. walked to the office.. no one was there, doors locked, no emergency call box or contact information. On a cell phone I googled their website for their phone directory. No One responded to the “emergency” after hours line. I left at least 6 messages between the hours of 0545- 074O. No one responded or called back! It was around 0745 that the front desk “opened” that someone let us in our room. I was not charged for the room, but that did not make up for the fact that I missed the triathlon that was the sole purpose of my stay. Hours of training, registration fee, travel from Phila.to do the tri.. and NO ONE was on site to let me in my room for two hours, no security, no operator to contact in an emergency, no call box, and a useless emergency number to call that goes directly to voice mail that no one answered or responded to. Even called the state police and they too only had the same useless emergency number to call. I don’t want this to happen to anyone else. I hope this review has them make the necessary changes and have a plan B in the event that the person “on call” is unable to respond to off hour emergencies.

Cottage not up to snuff This resort has very nice landscaping and is Orvis endorsed for fly fishing. I hear that the rooms in the main lodges are fine. But, we stayed in the 3 bedroom Beach Cottage at $500 a night. It was not one of the quaint stone cottages, but was instead a tired looking clapboard building. There were a few issues. Upon entry, it smelled musty. I left the front door open for several hours and opened two windows. ( the window sills were covered in green/black muck, but, housekeeping fixed this on our first night, which was appreciated). The air filter was dirty, so I removed it and placed on the porch. A new filter appeared the next day. The smell improved somewhat after 24 hours. The bathrooms were ancient - circa 1960s. One toilet rocked / needed bolts tightened. One of the showers had cracked lead-looking paint near the ceiling. The lighting was insufficient. Imagine a nicely sized king bedroom with one one-bulb lamp, and just one bedside table. The low light contributed to my losing an earring. One of the three beds had a broken frame, my son did his best to prop it up. No luggage stands. No safe. The couches had peeling vinyl. In one bedroom, there was a 12/2 wire jutting out of the carpet, uncapped. I'm guessing it wasn't live, but I didn't touch it to find out. Needless to say, if I were running the resort, I would not rent out this cottage until after extensive renovations. It was likely the worst place to stay at an otherwise a pleasant resort. Only other thing was the train, which came through, at maybe 300 meters away, 4 or 5 times each night. I would have closed the windows to cut down on the sound, but kept them open to air the place out. They did have a nice restaurant, and the dinner was quite good.

A beautiful resort and a wonderful wedding venue We just held our daughter's wedding at Allenberry. We had a 3 day affair starting on Friday and ending on Memorial Day. We had 106 people with almost everyone staying on site. The event was magical. The setting is beautiful with the creek in the background. The mansion was lovely for the immediate family and the Still House was a retreat for the couple. The food Friday night, Saturday morning and Sunday brunch but especially the wedding dinner was fantastic. Rebekah the chef was amazing. We had undercounted for Friday night and they managed to keep the food going and no one was aware of the shortage. The Wedding dinner was amazing. We had a local ice cream truck provide dessert as recommended by the then events manager. It was a big hit. The current events manager , Meredith is beyond wonderful. She was incredibly responsive to all our needs. The staff was amazing. They were helpful and attentive. The housekeeping manager Kelly was especially helpful and the rooms were well cleaned with lots of fresh towels. We arranged fly fishing for Sunday and Ashley and Jacob really made it special. Yoga on Saturday morning was also wonderful The only negative was that although the pool was opened for us it turned out to have a major leak and was not available. Some people went in the creek. Others played pickleball. We have visited Allenberry several times over the last few months and have been charmed each time.

Lovely place! Just returned with wife and daughter from a quick one-night getaway over Memorial Day weekend. Beautiful grounds, very spacious and comfortable room, and good service from front desk. Absolutely no issues and enjoyed our short stay very much. Not sure what so many are complaining about, although we didn't eat at the restaurant. Not a ton of stuff to do in Boiling Springs but the Allenberry is a very pleasant resort.

Amazing Wellness experience I just returned from a girls weekend away at Allenberry. This truly is a special place. We enjoyed our stay at the beautiful Creek House. We attended a play and dined at the Barn restaurant which was delicious! I have visited Allenberry before but this was my first time experiencing the wellness center. The restorative therapies were incredible. Gabby and Maddy were so helpful and kind. They did a great job explaining the different therapies and their benefits. They helped guide us individually to treatments that fit our needs. After our appointments, we were encouraged to rest in the relaxation room. The staff ordered us food from the barn restaurant and it was a perfect way to end our time there. If you stay at Allenberry, be sure to visit the wellness center! There is certainly something there for everyone. Thanks to Katie and Greg for making our stay such a memorable one.
