Houston, Texas: Space History and Museums in Nation’s Fourth-Largest City

As the nation’s fourth-largest city by population, Houston has established itself as one of the Gulf Coast’s most thriving cultural hubs. The city’s museum distict has 19 museums covering everything from history to art to science. For art lovers, the Menil Collection—which Frommer’s calls “one of the great private collections of the world”—is a must-see. Here, you’ll browse an array of 20th-century art from Jasper Johns, René Magritte, and Andy Warhol, as well as artifacts from Africa and the Pacific Islands.

You could also spend an entire day exploring Houston’s science institutions. When Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell famously stated, “Houston, we have a problem,” he was talking to mission control at Space Center Houston. Here, visitors can tour the historic mission-control room and get a behind-the-scenes look at astronauts training for the International Space Station. Along Houston’s Hermann Park, The Health Museum exhibits a large-scale human body that you can enter to learn about how your organs operate.

A Moldy Anniversary Weekend We have stayed in the hotel four times. It was fresh, hip and close to good areas to visit in Houston. Unfortunately the hotel has gone down hill as far as upkeep and appears a little run down. The hall on our floor smelled like stinky weed. So somebody was smoking in several rooms near us. Disturbing and ruined my entire visit, our bed has hair in it, the back of sink was dirty, and the bowl had a long hair on it. My thought was how did they missed this. The worst part is the shower has black mold in several areas. Meaning the cleaning staff is not cleaning and doing the bare minimum to try to give the appearance of clean. I did not turn on the light directly over the shower, trying to be romantic with spouse on our anniversary weekend so , I did not see the mold until after my second shower on my second day. Freaked me out and I felt disgusting after that. I had breathed in all those mold spores. Later My eyes felt puffy, my throat started draining and then there is the headache. I could not sleep all night because it was hurting. The hotel is booked out so no rooms to change too. Front desk staff sent maintenance right away. The cleaning staff changed our bedding for us. We were too tired from working and the drive to deal with it the first night. With clean sheets, the bed is comfortable. The front desk staff have always been friendly and attentive. Never been an issue with customer service. Been up since 1am with this headache. Will be too tired to enjoy my anniversary weekend.

This Hotel has what it takes. I choose this hotel because it was walking distance to the Galleria Mall. Since the very first phone calls for information, the staff was always very helpful. I ask for an allergy prove room, and I got it perfectly. The room was vey clean and the bedding super comfortable. The corridors walking to the room could have less chemicals scents. I call for help with some amenities in the room, and the front desk always sent someone very fast, a special thanks to their engineer Jose', who help me twice and always with a great attitude. The soap in the bathroom was well choose, the scent was just great, THE best I ever fond in a hotel, the decoration very modern and beautiful. The only problem I had was that I ask for a morning wake up call, and got none, but the Front Desk young lady, called Courtney made up for the mistake very professionally, so I am grateful. Over all, I would stay again with them. It was a great trip, must say I was impressed. Maria S.

Worst hotel EVER!!!! I gave just 1 point because I couldn’t give less, this hotel does not deserve to be considered as a hotel. First of all the smell in the hallways is awful, the window shades completely broken, the bathroom not properly clean... but the worst thing of all is that this hotel does not clean the room everyday! The excuse they gave me is that they do not clean rooms everyday due to COVID-19!! I have stayed during the whole pandemic in +10 hotels and this reason in completely UNACCEPTABLE, when I made the check in nobody told me so. I would never stay again in a aloft hotel, but I would like to give a heads up to the following customers for them to avoid staying here.
