Astoria, Oregon: Frontier Port with Scenic Hikes and Naval Museums

Astoria juts into the mouth of the Columbia River, the body of water that separates Oregon and Washington. The town has a storied past as one of the oldest US settlements west of the Rockies. It's named after John Jacob Astor, the entrepreneur who founded the Pacific Fur Company and established Fort Astoria in 1811. A few years earlier, in 1805, Lewis and Clark spent a winter camped out at Fort Clatsop; today, a replica fort commemorates the expedition with a visitor center and ranger-led programs. Fort Clatsop is also the trailhead for the popular Fort to Sea Trail, a 6.5-mile hike that winds through forests and across beach dunes en route to the Pacific Ocean.

The area's rich nautical history is documented through interactive exhibits at the Columbia River Maritime Museum. Here, you'll find artifacts such as a US Coast Guard surf rescue vessel and a historic sword and scabbard recovered from a shipwreck. Several miles west in Fort Stevens State Park, you can view remnants of the Peter Iredale shipwreck, an English vessel that ran aground in 1906 while the captain was texting and steering.

Harbour-side old style accommodation… An older motel style old accommodation right on the harbour front. Our room was large with an outlook directly out to sea. Everything worked in the room, but it was very dated. The continental breakfast was fine, enough to get the day started. Pricing was reasonable for a short stay. The desk crew were friendly, the breakfast crew not-so-much.

Clean and Safe - I think not![ The room was aged and dated which might explain the door lock intermittently failing to lock allowing the door to be opened without a key, but it doesn’t explain the flea infestation. We originally thought that the bite marks were from an area of town where we walked, but on the third night we identifier fleas in the room causing us to leave during the night. When I spoke to the front desk about the issues, I was told that the one that I killed would just attract more and if there were bugs they could have been left by a former guest. When I played a video of one of the fleas that we isolated, the desk clerk said that it might have been an ant but he really couldn’t tell. I called back at 9:30 that morning and spoke to Thomas who identified himself as a manager who repeatedly told me that they have never had an issue with their rooms. While I cannot speak about all of their room, I can assure you that room 260 failed to provide a safe and clean place to spend the night. My wife and I found that we were dealing with an untrained management staff, an under staffed cleaning crew, and uninformed maintenance workers. We checked in on August 13, 2024 and fled the night of August 15/16, 2024.

When trying hard doesn't work. From bad to worse. We sere surprised when we pulled up to the hotel that it was located in an industrial area of the riverfront. The advertisement for the hotel shows views of a small craft marina but that wasn't our experience. The room we were given was at the end of a wing of the property that overlooked a mountain of cut logs waiting for shipment with logging trucks regularly going in and out with shipments of logs. Our stay started out good enough and quickly went down hill fast. The front desk was friendly and accommodating. We were taken aback by the very tired appearance of the building which appeared to be undergoing limited repairs. Our room was the same. The chairs in our room were dirty and frayed and the deck outside was in need of paint. Once we settled in we tried to turn on the television but it wouldn't work. After several calls to the front desk they sent someone up who worked for about 45 minutes on it. Finally we asked for a different room and they moved us next door. So we re-packed our belongings and moved. Again we tried the TV in the second room and it didn't work either. Same person came back and worked for another 45 minutes to 1 hour to try to get it working to no avail. At that point we said forget it that we would take it up with the front desk in the morning. About 30 minutes later we hear a scratching at our door and when we opened it we were shocked to find two individuals trying go get it. They said the front desk had assigned them the room. Possession is 9/10ths and we weren't moving again and they headed back to the office. The final straw as the next morning when we went down for the included breakfast only to find there was none. The person working the breakfast said the truck didn't get there in time with their supplies. It goes without saying we weren't happy campers when we spoke to the manager. They did give us a large credit for all our trouble but I wouldn't recommend staying there until repairs and upgrades are made. I would hope they would be a little more truthful with their advertising.
