Atlanta, Georgia: Urban Parks and Renowned Aquarium in Capital of the South

Named 1 of 50 Places of a Lifetime by National Geographic, Atlanta lies near the Chattahoochee River in Georgia's northwest region known for its famed trees: magnolias, pines, and dogwoods. Despite a metropolitan population of more than five million and what is considered the world's busiest airport by passenger count, Atlanta seems to always offer a relaxing escape. Stroll through the 185 acres of botanical gardens, hiking trails, and oaks at Piedmont Park, or study one of the country's largest Civil War exhibitions at the Atlanta History Center.

Anchored by historical Peachtree Street, the city's midtown area boasts a thriving arts-and-culture scene. Opened in 1929, the Fox Theatre features imposing Egyptian architecture and a custom-made organ with a network of 3,622 pipes. Tours take place on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. The High Museum of Art spotlights more than 12,000 pieces of contemporary and folk art, ranging from Renaissance paintings to photographs from the civil-rights era. Kids might better enjoy the Georgia Aquarium, located downtown at Centennial Olympic Park. One of the world's largest aquariums with more than 8 million gallons of fresh and marine water and more than 100,000 animals, the aquarium is home to beluga whales, lionfish, whale sharks, bottlenose dolphins, and more.

Disappointed in what this has become... This place holds lots of good memories for me, but has obviously gone down hill. My teens were most looking forward to the Starbucks and went straight to it when we got there at 1:30, only to find it closed before normal check in time. We were so disappointed. The sign said they would open again at 6am so I told them we would come back before check out tomorrow. There was a sign advertising the water taxi that would take you to dinner, but the last one leaves to take you back to the resort at 5:00, so how exactly can you take it to dinner? We got settled in our room, which was clean. It was hot so I went to get ice, only to find that the ice machine didn't work. I called the front desk and they said they were waiting on a part to fix it, so I needed to go to a different floor to get ice. Why not put a sign on it and save us all the trouble? Why not offer the guest who called to bring them ice since they obviously need it after already going to the ice machine and back to call and wait while they talk to maintenance? My daughter said she wanted to swim in the indoor pool and with rain in the forecast I thought that would be better anyway. When we got to the pool it was closed. No notice about why it when it would be open again. So then we had to go back to the room again and call the front desk, only to find out it was being deep cleaned and wouldn't be open all day. If you're coming in the fall or winter you will DEFINITELY want to call ahead and make sure it's going to be open ahead of time. This was the second amenity my kids were looking forward to that was closed. We used the outdoor pool instead, which was cloudy and needed to be cleaned, with things floating in it. The hot tub was nice. I liked that you could be right next to your kids while they were in the pool. The pool towels were the right size, big enough for adults, but many of them had bleach stains. The next morning we got to the lobby at 6:30 to checkout and the Starbucks we had all been looking forward to. Unfortunately, Starbucks was closed. I walked to the front desk and asked the lady at the reception desk when it was going to open since the sign said 6:00am. She said the girl who was supposed to work today "had a family emergency" so they would be open "later today." There wasn't even any coffee in the lobby, which many resorts have. No way was I going to use the watery pod coffee in the room and we had already packed up and left early in anticipation of the Starbucks that closed early yesterday. If you just want a room to sleep in, it's fine. No one comes here just to sleep though. They stay in a typical hotel for that. We were disappointed in the whole experience and unless we see that it has been bought and managed by a better company, we will not be back. At least we have our memories of what it used to be and the many good experiences of when it was run differently.

Money well spent. Very memorable experience. I was able to wine, dine, and claim the mountain all in one weekend. Room service was great and the attendants were respectful. Breakfast was very good and the area was very cleanly. I was allowed a checkout extension time as well.Lots of engagements occur because of the resort so the lobby area is almost always busy. Nice jacuzzi and swimming pool area with bars outside. Call ahead to make sure if pool and jacuzzi are in good working order. It would be a disappointment for the kids for the summer months, myself included.
