Old-World Charm Meets Contemporary Elegance at Boutique Hotel Facing Niagara River
Barton Hill Hotel & Spa may be a relatively new hotel, but it's located in an area with a lot of history. The boutique hotel sits near the Canadian border in Lewiston, New York—the site of the first battle of the War of 1812. The surrounding Niagara region has a vintage feel to it as well: it’s dotted with charming villages and idyllic vineyards.
Beyond the hotel's white-stone entrance, you'll find a great room anchored by stately columns and outfitted with Greek Revival furniture. Upstairs, spacious King Portage Retreat and Escarpment Retreat guest rooms maintain a similar sense of elegance with decor that includes heavy draperies and wrought-iron chairs. Lewiston, New York: Historic Town Minutes from Niagara Falls
The town of Lewiston was one of western New York's earliest settlements, dating back to the 1600s. Owing to its strategic location near the Canadian border, it was the site from which the U.S. invaded Ontario in the first major battle of the War of 1812. Today, Lewiston’s quaint streets are lined with antique stores and art galleries. Nearby you’ll find the Niagara Wine Trail, an idyllic region dotted with several vineyards. The area is best known for producing ice wine, a sweet dessert varietal made from frozen grapes.
The Niagara River flows through town about 8 miles upstream from the American side of Niagara Falls. At that iconic spot, roughly 600,000 gallons of water thunder over the brink each second. Niagara Falls State Park offers a variety of lookout points. One of the best—the 282-foot observation tower at Prospect Point Park—can be accessed for free.
