Property at a Glance: Bear Mountain Overlook Lodge & Stone Cottages

Even though it’s just 45 miles north of the largest city in the United States, Bear Mountain Inn and Overlook Lodge feels very much removed from the hustle and bustle of New York. Bear Mountain State Park encircles the rustic property, and the lodge stands along the Hudson River. Rugged mountains surround the area, too; they’re inhabited by black bears and foxes.

  • Get pampered at Bear Mountain Spa, which offers a heated-lava-stone massage and aromatherapy, among other soothing treatments.
  • Fine dining: The culinary team crafts upscale American fare such as smoked pork loin and spätzle and venison burger at Restaurant 1915. The dining room features a rock fireplace, mounted deer heads, and exposed wooden beams. What’s more, with select options of this Getaway you’ll receive a $20 dining credit per stay valid at Restaurant 1915.
  • In-room amenities: All guest rooms have 32-inch TVs and free WiFi. Lodge rooms have microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers.

Bear Mountain, New York: Picturesque State Parks North of New York City

Bear Mountain State Park is situated in the Hudson River Valley, just 45 miles north of New York City. In good weather, it’s a popular spot to ice skate, picnic, hike, bike; in the wintertime, it’s open for cross-country skiing. Be sure to take a ride on the park’s unique merry-go-round that’s open on weekends only, featuring hand-painted landscapes and seats that are hand carved into resident animals, including a black bear, turkey, deer, fox, swan, and bobcat.

The park is also home to the Trailside Museums and Zoo, the latter of which is a center for injured or orphaned animals such as black bears, coyotes, and beavers. Bear Mountain State Park’s four museums are dedicated to various disciplines: check out exhibits of turtles, snakes, frogs, and salamanders in the herpetology section, or explore ones on geology and history.

During the fall, Harriman State Park turns into a tapestry of colorful foliage. Located just south, the park—the second-largest state park in New York state—has 200 miles of hiking trails, some of which become cross-country-skiing trails in the winter.

The lodge was beautiful and relaxing. We ended up needing to change our reservation from a queen bed to 2 doubles because of corona and it was no problem at all. Staff was very friendly. The food was amazing at 1915, if a little pricey. Totally worth it! I’ll def be back once the world has returned to normal.

Disappointing _ I was very excited to go to the bear mountain and they put us in one of the cottages. We'll to my surprise this room was horrid. They had the tiniest bathroom, a spider was in the tub. The bathroom was so small, you have to turn left and right in a tiny circle to access the toilet, sink, tub, and close the door. The door did not open fully because it was blocked by the tiny sink. The shower curtain had red droplets on it that may have been blood. The room had an Emergency Exit in our room that was to be used for all occupants of the cottage in case of an emergency with eight rooms. The green light on the emergency sign kept me up all night.

Come for the scenery not the room We stayed in one of the stone cottages. As you would expect given the nature of Overlook Lodge, the room was not up to modern standards. It was tiny and did not have a desk. The bathroom was very small with no place for toiletries. The walls were thin and you could hear people come and go outside. But the scenery and setting are gorgeous. So if you are willing to put up with the inconvenience and not have to spend any extra time in the room it is worth it. The 1915 Restaurant in the main hotel, a very pleasant half mile walk from the stone cottages, was excellent.

Excellent start.... After spending some amazing time at the Memorial Tower, with its magnificent views off the River Valley; we returned to the Inn (which we had checked out earlier) and engaged in their afternoon high-tea. The Inn has a comfortable wood-centric interior, which is a surprisingly pleasant complement to the formality of a full service tea. Our server, Shari, was friendly and attentive; lending to the enjoyment of the experience. The sweet and savories accompanying the tea were nicely conceived and quite tasty. All and all, this became a very satisfying afternoon; and along with the earlier spectacular time at the Memorial Tower, made for an excellent start to our 10 day exploration of the Hudson River Valley. The Inn has a nice gift shop, with a decent variety of area related items from which to choose. Any staff members we encountered throughout the facility, were welcoming, informative and accommodating. Even though it was late April, there was a fair amount of activity at the Inn; and as we were leaving in the late afternoon, some event was creating a steady stream of incoming traffic to the parking area. If we are again in the area, a visit back to the Inn will definitely be on our agenda.
