Lancaster County, Pennsylvania: Crossroads of Amish Culture and German Heritage

Lancaster County sits in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. A number of Amish families—many of them descendants of the German immigrants who settled in the region in the 18th and 19th centuries—still farm the land here, living and working by the same timeless principles and unadorned methods they've been using for generations. On a drive through the area, you'll see covered bridges spanning the Conestoga River and probably share the road with a horse-drawn buggy or two. At stops such as Kitchen Kettle Village, you can watch experts canning jellies, jams, and relishes and sample homemade baked goods.

To tour the countryside in style, take a ride aboard a coal-burning steam locomotive on the Strasburg Rail Road. As the train chugs past farmers tending fields and cattle grazing on hay and strudel, parlor-car attendants serve cocktails and snacks to passengers in the dining car or in first class. Across the street from the station in Strasburg, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania chronicles the history of the track via rotating exhibits and more than 100 locomotives and railcars.

Staff needs "hospitality" mindset The staff are friendly enough, but sorely lack the ability to adapt. For those of us who travel frequently, we expect a certain level of accommodation. Simple things, like being able to print out a set of driving directions, were a real challenge for the staff to complete in a timely manner. The facility itself lacks a few simple basic things, such as the fact that the entry drive up has a curb separating the vehicle from the entrance doors. News flash: people have luggage on wheels or wish to use the luggage cart, which cannot be used up a curb! Also the layout of the hotel is very weird and confusing, with terrible signage. They also do not have any standard luggage carts. On a positive note, the staff that were responsible for the breakfast, did a wonderful job. For the owners of this property, I would recommend hiring experienced staff, upgrading the signage, getting rid of the curb, and deep clean the hotel and rooms more often. I will inspect the hotel again, on my next trip through Carlisle. If improvements are made, I may stay here again.

Best Western Carlisle South One night stay, the room was clean and supplies were well stocked. The rate was very good and the rooms are pet friendly for a fee. The breakfast was good, many choices to get the day started. We will stay at this hotel again. Easy on and off I-81.

Not worthy of the Best Western name There was no welcome for being a best western member. There is a sign on the front desk, but it would be nice to hear it. There was no sign by elevator showing which way the rooms are. The 2 queen beds in room 216 were both lopsided as I sat on them. The side I sat on went down and the other side went up. I tried both beds, and they were the same. Called to see if there was another room available, but none in my "category". Finally I got a king room. I checked the bed before I dragged my stuff into the new room. Jordan at the front desk said I had to bring the old key down. Apparently it couldn't wait until the next morning. I just completed a 6 hour drive, and had to change rooms. It was a very long day. When I told him that the beds were lopsided as I sat on them, he said "I don't know about that". Huh? He doesn't know if all the rooms are like that. Huh??? I told him housekeeping should know that there was something wrong with the beds. He said "I'm not housekeeping ". Apparently he doesn't have a last name either, even though I asked him twice for it. At breakfast, one egg & cheese was left; other side of tray was empty. I was told when I checked in that there would be eggs and sausages, so maybe that tray was for that? I sat there for about 20 minutes, and no one came to take stock of the items. Breakfast is still available for another hour. There were other items available, such as bagels, fruit, fruit cups, waffles, and oatmeal. After breakfast I retrieved my luggage from the room, and I checked the egg tray. Yep! Empty. The sign on the fridge said "yogurt & pastries. Where were the pastries?? This is one hotel I will never stay at again. We like Best Westerns, but this one is now on our "never again " list.
