It’s surrounded by boreal forests and mountain peaks, which draw hikers, bikers, and skiers, depending on the season. Because of its location on the lake’s southern shore, the eponymous town of Lake George and the surrounding area were inhabited before European settlers arrived. The region later played a part in the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812. The Fort William Henry Museum, a reconstruction of the 1755 fort from the French and Indian War, features model barracks, musket-firing demonstrations, and artifacts recovered from the original site.
