Flagstaff, Arizona: Route 66 History and Outdoor Adventures

Mentioned in Nat King Cole’s song “Route 66,” the northern Arizona city of Flagstaff was once a popular pit stop for those driving along the 2,400-mile highway. The town's sunny skies and warm weather continue to draw travelers today, allowing cyclists, hikers, and joggers to enjoy more than 50 miles of trails and more than 650 acres of city parks. East of Flagstaff, you’ll find the Walnut Canyon National Monument, where you can hike the Rim or Island trails while exploring cliff formations and remnants of dwellings once inhabited by indigenous peoples.

Flagstaff’s elevation and clear night skies made it the perfect location for the now-famous Lowell Observatory. Pluto was discovered from the observatory in 1930, and space research continues there today. The site is open to the public for guided daytime tours.

Great place to stay with your dog Very clean rooms with extremely friendly staff. We were traveling with our dog and the pet friendly room was immaculate! It was enjoyable having a good hot breakfast before we hit the road again, and the woman who was attending to the breakfast area checked to make sure you had everything that you needed. Lots of restaurants nearby to grab dinner.

Pass it by I don’t know where all these good reviews come from. Perhaps they are not real customers. We arrived on a Tuesday night in December. The hotel was easy to find and check in was quick and easy. The area had lots of shopping and restaurants nearby. The only elevator was near the lobby but it was a very long walk to other end of the floor where the room was. There was no ice machine or vending machines on second floor. The hotel was clean but room was small and bath was cramped. Two people cannot brush their teeth at the same time. The breakfast was okay with cheese omelets, pork patties, biscuits and gravy. There was a pancake machine and many pastries along with cut up fruit. However, the breakfast room was cold and the food not very warm. The hotel was a disappointment. I cannot recommend this hotel except for a one-night stay if that.

Beware of Black Mold Black mold in the shower and around the sink faucet. Hallway carpet looked like the river of poo and smelled of urine. When asked to be moved to another room due to the black mold, associate tried to say they were booked for the weekend due to the holiday (Thanksgiving) but the parking lot was practically empty on Thanksgiving day. She did finally assign us another room after I informed her of my health issues but with a warning that we may have to move again. Even offered to have maintenance come out to deal with the mold the following day. I would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone.
