Houston, Texas: Space History and Museums in Nation’s Fourth-Largest City

As the nation’s fourth-largest city by population, Houston has established itself as one of the Gulf Coast’s most thriving cultural hubs. The city's museum district has 19 museums covering everything from history to art to science. For art lovers, the Menil Collection—which Frommer’s calls “one of the great private collections of the world”—is a must-see. Here, you’ll browse an array of 20th-century art from Jasper Johns, René Magritte, and Andy Warhol, as well as artifacts from Africa and the Pacific Islands.

You could also spend an entire day exploring Houston’s science institutions. When Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell famously stated, “Houston, we have a problem,” he was talking to mission control at Space Center Houston. Here, visitors can tour the historic mission control room and get a behind-the-scenes look at astronauts training for the International Space Station. Along Houston’s Hermann Park, The Health Museum exhibits a large-scale human body that you can enter to learn about how your organs operate.

I did a reservation with this hotel on Groupon. When I arrived, the Front Desk almost laughed that they were sold out and would not be honoring the Groupon. They said they preferred other sites like hotel.com or Booking.com. As if that was relevant to my situation. They had no concern. Me and my daughter were left without a room. They were unbothered.

Great room, Good Food, It will impress! Very nice reception, pleasant and fast. The room was spacious and bright. We ate in the hotel restaurant, and it was good. We had the shrimp dumplings, shrimp tempura, and egg rolls. Everything was tasty. I would strongly recommend this hotel which is in the Medical Center. It is a great value.

Appearance of luxury, but not great experience The facility is very nice. Classy with some unique amenities, so upon arrival it feels very upscale and luxurious. The valet staff outside are courteous and helpful. The rooms have really nice hair dryers and espresso machines. However, the housekeeping and customer service need significant work. Our room had 1 towel, no hand towels or washcloths, no tissues, and no extra toilet paper. The shower was wet inside when we arrived and bathroom floor was sticky - as in my socks stuck to the floor when I walked into the bathroom. I called the front desk and they sent someone right away, but the person spent less than a minute with spray bottle and mop and when she left the floor was still sticky. At that point I didn't feel like I could call them back AGAIN so I ended up scrubbing it myself with some handfuls of toilet paper (due to their being only one towel lol). The sticky ended up being something that must have been dribbled then spilled and smeared around. Pretty gross. And....the carpet beside the bed smelled funny. The sheets and comforter smelled like bleach or I might have just left. After they serviced the room the next day and didn't add towels I did call down, but they still only brought up 1 more and no hand towels or washcloth - so strange. On the customer service side - I booked via Southwest Hotels - I always do. I had a confirmation showing that I booked and prepaid for a 1 bedroom suite, but the hotel would not honor the booking. They put me into a regular hotel room saying that the 3rd party had only reserved a studio room for me. I asked if they had the 1 bedroom suites available and they said they did, but I would need to pay more (I was never told how much more). They would not honor the reservation and said I had to take it up with the 3rd party. I called SW hotels and they called and talked to a manager but were unable to get them to change the reservation either and said someone would call me back in 24-48 hours - when I said I'd have checked out by then they told me I could dispute the charge on my credit card. So....I ended up with a downgraded room AND advice to dispute the charge - how crazy! I get if there was a mixup with the 3rd party, but ultimately hotels list their rooms with 3rd parties - I don't have a relationship with them, they do. So, to make the miscommunication my problem was just crazy to me. Overall, the hotel is pretty and in a good location, but I wouldn't stay there again - I questioned the cleanliness and didn't receive the room I paid for.
