Jackson, Mississippi: Blues-Music Heritage and Civil-Rights History in the State’s Capital

In 1966, Mississippi became the last state to end Prohibition. But in Jackson’s Gold Coast, however, it was like the controversial ban had never even existed. During the Prohibition era, the coast was a sanctum of gambling, bootleg liquor, and blues, which sparked the widespread popularity of Farish Street, an African American district akin to Harlem. There, legendary musicians such as Cadillac George Harris and Jesse Robinson got their starts. Though this infamous district faded soon after Prohibition’s repeal, the city’s love of music never did. Jackson is still home to dozens of juke and blues joints and nightclubs.

Equally as vibrant as the city’s music scene is its past. Delve deeper into musical history on the Mississippi Blues Trail, or view some of the state’s most significant legislation at the Old Capitol Museum amid downtown’s Greek Revival architecture. Numerous Mississippi Freedom Trail markers, including those at Tougaloo College and Medgar Evers’ home, chart the city’s civil-rights history. A new, somewhat historical site related to the movement has also cropped up in the Fondren neighborhood, where scenes from the movie The Help were filmed.

robbery our room was robbed by the hotel staff. A key was made by the front desk and given to someone else. They would not give the police the key records and we were forced to get a warrant. BEWARE! It's a ring of them at the hotel. The hotel had no manager on duty to talk to and they offered no apology. RUN NOW, OR GET ROBBED!

Its closed, no one there I booked through a 3rd party. When i showed up on the afternoon of my stay there was no staff or guests present. A sign on the lobby door indicated the place was closed. So therefore I had to find a new place to stay, as well as can cancel through the 3rd party vendor.

Decent hotel that will soon be no longer. The hotel main lobby is very nice. Large with plenty of seating. The design is that of an old Lodge. Neat fireplace in the center of the room. They serve drinks in the evening from 5:30-7:00. The bartender is knowledgeable and can make you a great tequila sunrise, or margarita. She knows the area well and can make dinner suggestions as well. The rooms themselves are decent, (first floor are the best), but are starting to show age. No mini-fridge in the room. The water here is great for your skin, and the soaps the have are high quality. The pool is small, but nice. The outdoor area on the opposite side is quaint. Staff are friendly, even though they will all have to find a new place to work by July 2019. The Cabot Lodge will soon be an assisted living facility.
