Deadwood, South Dakota: Former Gold-Rush Town in the Black Hills
It’s been nearly 150 years since Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickock strolled into a saloon in Deadwood, but the former Gold Rush mining camp is still lined with Old West–style taverns and casinos. In the mid-2000s, it served as the setting for HBO’s outlaw-themed series Deadwood, and several historic sites have helped Deadwood earn a spot as a National Historic Landmark. Vintage locomotives and gold nuggets are on display at the Victorian-era Adams House and Museum. Mount Moriah Cemetery served as the site where Wild Bill Hickock was buried after he was gunned down in a poker game, which immortalized the term “Dead Man’s Hand.”
Ponderosa pines line the winding trails of nearby The Black Hills National Forest, which extends for more than a million acres south of Deadwood. And at the historic Broken Boot Gold Mine, kids can ride carts through mine shafts and pan for gold. The indoor WaTiki Waterpark and Mount Rushmore make for an easy day trip, just a hour outside of downtown Deadwood.
