Austin, Texas: Proudly Offbeat State Capital and Live-Music Capital of the World

Built in 1888, the pink-granite Texas Capitol building in Austin is the largest state capitol in the country and even taller than the US Capitol in Washington, DC—proof that everything is, indeed, bigger in Texas. Yet Austin stands apart from the rest of the state politically and culturally, a fact that locals seem to revel in. "Keep Austin Weird" is a popular motto here, appearing on bumper stickers and T-shirts. The weirdness manifests itself all over town, where you’ll find a death-metal-themed pizza place, a cathedral made of garbage, and the Museum of Natural & Artificial Ephemerata, which displays an 1893 World’s Fair stereograph and one of Marilyn Monroe’s cigarette butts.

Austin has been dubbed the Live Music Capital of the World thanks to the city's nearly 200 venues, where bands play everything from blues to punk rock. In fact, Travel + Leisure magazine named Austin one of America's Best Music Cities, calling it the "mother ship for indie rock and alternative-country types." Stubb's Bar-B-Q books some of the bigger acts that come to town, including Johnny Cash and Snoop Dogg. In addition to the live entertainment taking place on a nightly basis, two massively popular music festivals—South by Southwest and Austin City Limits—draw in huge crowds each year.

We stumbled upon this hotel & thank goodness we did! Talk about clean, friendly, and overall top notch experience! Everything is new and modernized! Maiah, at the front desk was super friendly & informative. The only downside is parking. You have to pay $50 for valet, even though we could have parked across the street, but we were told it’s not public parking & police are giving tickets. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Great First Experience. It was my first time staying at this hotel. Not only was the location great and convenient but the staff was very welcoming and knowledgeable. Oscar at the front desk answered all of our questions. My colleague and I were traveling for work and we had to use a new booking system for the first time and he made sure the check-in and check-out process went smoothly. Rolando at the bar served great drinks and created a welcoming environment. Mr. Forbes answered all of our questions regarding the valet parking and instructed us on how to get a receipt.

Paige for the win! I was a guest in the hotel as well as attended events that my organization hosted in the hotel. The accommodations were great. Spacious and updated rooms. Parking was convenient and the valet was quick and friendly. Paige showed us phenomenal service and attention to detail in regard to our events. I watched her ensure our guests got where they needed to go and made sure they had everything they needed. Her service exceeded my expectations. I've attended this event in many hotels for several years. This by far was the best.

Great Event Location & Lovely Views! Hotel is very nice and clean. Loved the views of downtown and Rainey street! Attended our homecoming reunion, and Paige’s hospitality and customer service was impeccable! Valet/Parking was a little $$$, & the drinks were watered down, but would love to stay again!
