Times Square, Manhattan: Flashy Neon Lights and World-Class Culture

Times Square is located at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The famous address—affectionately known as “the Crossroads of the World”—is home to hypnotizing billboards, giant wraparound news tickers, and the neon lights of Broadway. Beyond the glitz and gimmicks, there are a number of world-class cultural offerings in the area, ranging from museums to Michelin-rated restaurants. Buildings of historical and architectural interest include the Paramount Building and One Times Square, site of the annual New Year’s Eve ball drop.

Nearby, the Museum of Modern Art houses a trove of masterpieces including Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night, Claude Monet’s waterlily paintings, and Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans. Save time for a stroll through the museum’s outdoor sculpture garden, where dazzling installations are clustered around sparkling reflecting pools. About a mile north of Times Square, the David H. Koch Theater is home to one of the world’s foremost dance companies—the New York City Ballet, which stages contemporary works as well as classics like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.

Great location but tired hotel even by nyc standards. Staff were very pleasant throughout my 3 night stay. The hotel has seen better days. When I was there they were replacing all the TVs in the rooms which is good but I did think they would be better spending the money on updating the bathrooms or AC or carpets etc.

Yet another superb stay Not long back from a 2 week trip to New York City (mid-November to early December) and once again I stayed at the Candlewood Suites Times Square; I've stayed here several times now and for me this is my "home from home" when I'm over from Scotland; the staff are very friendly and that is what makes a hotel, whether it be 3 star rated or 5 star!!; the rooms are a good size and very clean and comfortable, a decent sized bathroom and a well-equipped kitchen area with microwave, induction hob and fridge/freezer plus crockery, cutlery and pots and pans - means you don't have to eat out all the time - and there are plenty of supermarkets and delis in the area; it is central for everything - bars, restaurants, shopping, tourist attractions and is less than 10 minutes walk from Times Square. If you're looking for a reasonably priced hotel in mid-town Manhattan then I recommend CSTS - you won't be disappointed; to all the staff, especially Laura who is just brilliant, I wish you all a very happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year. So until we meet again - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Won’t be returning I will go onto describe the rest of our stay, but first and foremost, the sofa “bed” in the living room was AWFUL. If you have more than 2 guests, either pay for 2 rooms or find a different hotel. A thin layer of cotton over a jumble of creaking metal bars apparently counts as a “mattress”. I don’t typically have back pain, but after 3 nights on that mess of a layout, I am bent over in pain. Given that our NYC portion of the trip has been followed by ongoing travel, I am very disappointed about this, as it’s hindered my enjoyment of the rest of our trip. Also, the sofa bed is laid out poorly. The only way to get from one side of the room to the window, is to roll across the “bed” (aka piece of cotton covering the metal bars). The bed stretches all the way to the dressers, meaning there is no way to walk around the bed. Location was good, that is why we chose this location. Staff was very hit or miss. Some associates were outstanding and went above and beyond to make our stay pleasant and to make us feel welcomed; others seemed bothered when we asked questions regarding the property. The phone didn’t work, so we had to go to the desk downstairs when we needed something. The bathroom door felt like you were closing a vault in order to get it to fully shut. I’m guessing the building has shifted over time, but this left us shoulder checking the door to get it shut. The air would randomly set to odd temperatures (72° to 75°, 68° to 72°, etc.) without us adjusting it. Elevators had signs mentioning the needed repairs. Experience was a bit of a mixed bag, but I won’t be staying at this location again. They need to do some major upgrades.

A Good Stay in a Good Location We were somewhat concerned before arrival with some of these reviews, but we were pleasantly surprised. We had a good sized, clean room on Floor 29 with a good set of facilities, including a good stocked kitchenette and a good sized fridge. Granted the hotel is a little dated, but everything was functional. On a city break you spend little time in the room anyway! Floor 29 had concerned me, and although we had a naff view, we were barely in the room to look out the window, and we never had to wait longer than a couple of minutes for a lift. AC was good an functional, TV worked well, and staff were helpful should any additional bits and pieces needed for the room. No cleaners etc. During our stay, but I can fold over my own duvet..... Free tea and coffee from room by reception was a nice touch on your way out. Overall, we had an enjoyable stay and I would urge people to think about how long you spend in a room, and based on value for money, we were happy!
