Carmel-by-the-Sea, California: Bohemian Outpost with Boutiques and Wineries

The brilliant blue waters of the Pacific and the electric green of verdant meadows saturate Carmel-by-the-Sea, which hugs the rocky coastline just a couple hours south of San Francisco. Once an outpost for bohemian types such as Jack London, the 1-square-mile town remains true to its roots as a traditional English village: streetlights and numbered addresses are nonexistent. An influx of European-style bistros, valley vineyards, and boutiques have joined the mix, and the town has live theater and 40 art galleries. The area also boasts a wealth of outdoor activities, including world-class golfing at Pebble Beach and whale watching and kayaking in the Pacific.

Carmel Mission is such a cute and cozy Inn. It’s the perfect location with the barnyard shopping center right next door, which allows for easy access to dinning and the beach is literally 5 mins away. Oh and the best part of this place is that they are pet friendly! I will definitely be staying here again!

Poor reception service We have stayed at this inn four times over the years, primarily for its convenient location rather than the service. Unfortunately, the reception service has consistently been disappointing. During our most recent visit, we checked in 10 minutes before 4 PM and were informed our room wasn’t ready, which was understandable. The receptionist asked us to return in 10 minutes for the keys, but even after 4:05 PM, we were told the room still wasn’t ready. Another receptionist then claimed we hadn’t even checked in, prioritized assisting another guest, and only returned to us when our room became available. Meanwhile, other guests were being given their rooms ahead of us. Additionally, although we had booked a room with a balcony, we were once again assigned a room overlooking the building’s unappealing rooftop. When we raised the issue, we were told it was the only room left and couldn’t be changed, leaving us dissatisfied. Out of our four visits, we were assigned to the side of the building with a view of the raw rooftop three times. The dining service this time was also subpar. At the Shearwater restaurant for breakfast, it took over 15 minutes to receive our coffee and milk, as the waitress was busy assisting other tables with their bills. She even forgot one of our orders, requiring a reminder to bring it without offering an apology. Butter was served 10mins after the order were served. There were other issues too numerous to mention. After giving this place multiple chances over the years, we’ve decided to stay elsewhere on our next visit to Carmel.

Great value and service We stayed here on a girls trip weekend. The location was great, not in the main town but only a 5 minute drive. Across the street is a grocery store and CVS, starbucks and alot of restaurants within walking distance. The Irish pub next door was great also! Service was extremely quick, every employee we encountered was so kind and courteous. The hot tub was a great amenity. We utilized the fire pit one night, brought our own wine, and it was amazing! No matter what we asked for the answer was always an easy "yes" from the staff. We had a $30/ day breakfast credit and the food was really good.
