Portola, California: Colorful Forests Northwest of Lake Tahoe

Portola is located in Plumas County, which lies amid northern California’s Sierra Nevada mountains and is largely covered by the Plumas National Forest. With an abundance of dogwood, willow, and maple trees, the area’s autumn foliage rivals that of the northeast United States.

Naturally, the area’s beauty lends itself to outdoor activities. Fishers visit here to find rainbow trout amid the county’s 1,000 miles of streams, and birders walk through the forests in search of red crossbills and prairie falcons. In the winter, you can ski at the nearby Eureka Ski Bowl, which is known around the area for its 1860s-style long-board races held in January, February, and March. For more boating and skiing, drive about an hour southeast to Lake Tahoe, a picturesque body of water that straddles the California-Nevada state line.

Loved our stay at the Chalet View Lodge. The staff was friendly and helpful and the grounds were beautiful. We were able to hike out from the back of the property and find a sledding hill for my kids. The brewery on-site had shuffleboard and a pool table and friendly staff. The breakfast was fine for us: hard boiled eggs, muffins, oatmeal, yogurt, cereal & Starbucks. We hope to visit again!

Very spacious, vaulted ceilings with loft, newer buildings, great staff, Roku (streaming) TV, nice lobby with Starbucks, 3 Tesla destination chargers, nice bar. Great out-of-the-way get-a-way!

Disappointing Unfortunately we didn’t get to stay at the lodge. We had booked our room to stay last night, the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. We arrived late, at 9.30pm as I expressed on the booking. When we got there the place was all locked up for the night, totally understandable considering the late hour. There were two numbers on the door to contact the night manger and also a second night manger. We called these numbers for half an hour and left multiple messages to find out how we can get into the room we had booked. No answer at all, and no response. We have two small children, who were falling asleep in the truck while we were trying to get to our room. We eventually had to leave the premises at 10.15pm, and find somewhere else to stay. Today I waiting until 5pm in the hopes that someone would reply or contact me regarding our forgotten booking last night, but nothing. When I called to find out what had happened, the person on the desk said there had been a mix up with the person closing up last night, and they didn’t leave out a key! I explained what had happened and how we went looking for other accommodations at that late hour last night, with two children in tow, and she just asked if I would like a refund. Which, yes, of course I do, we didn’t get to stay at the room we paid for, and we had to pay for another place to stay. I asked her to have a manger or someone call me back to explain further what the problem may have been, and again, I have heard nothing back. I understand mistakes happen, and even scrambling to find somewhere else for my family to stay at 10.30pm at night, I imagined there what have been a mix up. But, to not have anyone reach out I’m throughout all this time and after so many calls and messages is beyond disappointing.

Always a great stay We have stayed at the Chalet View many times over the years, and always enjoy a pleasant relaxing time. Excellent grounds to walk around, and games to play. The pool area is clean with plenty of lounge equipment. The pool is always refreshing for an afternoon swim. The Starbucks in the lobby is an added treat. They also have a brewery with small plates that opens each day at 4.
