Hotel at a Glance: Chateau Westport

There are many US cities named Westport: Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and California all have one. But Westport, Washington, is truest to its name – it really is the country's westernmost port. Situated on a small peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and scenic Grays Harbor, the town is a natural choice for boating and watersports. Chateau Westport is located just 2 miles south of the port, making it a convenient launching pad for fishing trips, whale-watching tours, and long walks along miles of coastline.

  • Distance to the Pacific: less than a quarter-mile.
  • Date night: For a romantic night out, relax in the indoor hot tub or stroll to the beach. (temporarily closed)
  • Where you'll stay: Guest rooms feature refrigerators, microwaves, and Keurig coffeemakers.
  • Local seafood: Taste fresh Dungeness crab and salmon at nearby restaurants.

Westport, Washington: Quaint Coastal Town with Rugged Natural Beauty

The docks of Westport bustle with the activity of commercial and chartered fishing vessels and boats coming in from whale-watching excursions. You can head to the marina’s observation tower for a bird’s-eye view of the boats bobbing in Grays Harbor, Half Moon Bay, and North and South Bays. The marina district is also home to a number of small coffee shops and artisan boutiques.

Herons and cormorants make their seasonal homes in the state wildlife preserves surrounding Westport, and bald eagles are often seen gliding over the beach. Down the coast, surfers catch waves year-round; to join them, you can rent gear from one of the small shops nearby.

A perfectly good spot - kind staff, not fancy, family friendly Whether you enjoy the Chateau Westport may depend on your expectations. It is just fine - it's clean, it's near the ocean and it has everything you need. But fancy, it ain't. And some things are fraying at the edges. But the staff are kind and happy to help with anything you need and it has a number of nice touches. While we were there, someone broke a bottle in the pool area so it was closed for a night, and there was a fire alarm (please people, do not smoke in your hotel rooms!) So our luck could have been better. But the space is just fine for a nice weekend away as long as your expectations are calibrated. Things to note: * You can only see the ocean from floors 3 and 4, which are pricier but its worthwhile in my opinion *It's a walk to the ocean. There is an entry at the end of the walk but only 4 cars can park there. If you don't want to walk and you don't get a spot, it's over to the public entry a few blocks away. *Rooms don't have local TV - you can link into your streaming platform subscriptions and play from your library. But while we were there, bandwidth was an issue and we couldn't get through an episode of anything. Thankfully, the kids had something downloaded on their tablet otherwise could have been trouble. *No maid service. *No hot tub. *A nice small arcade with foosball, a few games to play. *While we were there, people were really loving the poo...and it was loud. I wonder if this could be a bother from a sound perspective for rooms on the ground floor.

Beware of the park if you have a pet! PLEASE BEWARE! If you are travelling with your dog....be extremely cautious in the park out back. We took our lab onto the grass for an evening stroll and suddenly he was yelping and trying to lift up his four paws. We took him to the pathway and discovered his pads were full of FINE NEEDLE like debris that also went through my sandals into my feet. I asked at the front desk who owned the park and they said the hotel does. There was no sign up to keep off the grass. We were told that it blows in around the area at certain times. Perhaps if you live there you would know this!!! We did not know and it caused pain to our pet and myself. Very poor.

Run Down This property is run down. The curtains in the room were ripped up. The beds sagged. Water dripped from faucets. No restaurant and none very close. On the positive side, the lobby was clean and set up for socializing. You could walk to the ocean, maybe 1/4 mile.
