Cape Cod, Massachusetts: Historic Towns and Miles of Protected Beaches

In the late 19th century, Cape Cod blossomed into a summer vacation destination as visitors swapped crowded coastal cities for the sandy shores of eastern Massachusetts. Today, the arm-shaped peninsula, located 60 miles south of Boston, encompasses 15 idyllic towns, rolling dunes, and 300 miles of sandy shoreline—and it’s still the place where many East Coasters choose to spend their leisurely summer days. Popular attractions include fresh-seafood restaurants, quaint stores, and bicycle trails, such as the 11-mile Shining Sea Bikeway that wends from North Falmouth to Woods Hole.

On the uppermost tip of the Cape, the free-spirited art colony of Provincetown attracts visitors year-round. This is one of the best places to head for a vibrant nightlife scene—there are cabarets, bars, and lounges aplenty. Pop into the Provincetown Art Association and Museum to check out local artwork, both historical and contemporary.

Quick weekend away Went back here for a weekend with family. We were in a cottage room with sitting area and two queens. The resort is showing some wear and tear, and the bathroom was a bit old, but the setting and service are still as lovely as ever. The room service was fantastic.

Lovely resort but not the best room accommodations! We have been going to Ocean Edge with our kids almost every year for 10-12 yrs. This year my husband and I decided to try a new place as we were vacationing alone and Chatham was on our top list. The grounds are gorgeous, the private beach very large ( although nobody swims in the water due to many seals around),all the restaurants have excellent food and the adults-only pool is exquisite. We did however have a problem with the room which did not match the Ocean Edge quality- the bathroom had no vanity and no place to keep any toiletries with even the toothbrush falling into the sink, the bathroom floor was constantly wet due to a leak probably from the sink area, the bed was not very comfortable and we were given a room facing a parking lot(we booked a partial ocean view room!)- all in all not what we expected from a $1,200/night room! Despite it all we enjoyed our stay and will most certainly be back with the hope that we will get a better room!

Expensive, but quite a treat! Had occasion to be entertained at the Beach Bar Grill recently, and it was really quite a special place, albeit very expensive. $14 for a CUP of clam chowder, $28 for two swordfish tacos, a bit over the top…….however, the food and service were both excellent, and you can’t beat the location and ambiance. There was some confusion with keys when we were leaving, resulting in my leaving behind a set of keys. Gabriel, a bellman, was extremely understanding when I called the next day, finding the keys in minutes and delivering them, personally, in about 1/2 an hour…….that’s OUTSTANDING customer service!!
