Reno, Nevada: Casino City with Arts and Outdoor Adventure

Reno lives up to its billing as “The Biggest Little City in the World" thanks to its flashy casinos, cultural centers, and restaurants worthy of a much larger metropolis, all packed together on Virginia Street. If you need a break from courting Lady Luck at the big gaming palaces such as Eldorado and Silver Legacy (which was born here), head to the Truckee River Arts District to explore the Nevada Museum of Art and the National Automobile Museum. Because of its location at the foot of the Sierra Nevada and just east of Tahoe National Forest, the city also puts visitors within reach of rushing rivers and high mountain ranges for hiking, rafting, and gold-rush reenacting.

Hotel room was not clean at all. Couldn’t sleep from other guest yelling in the hallway and rooms all night. Housekeeping walked in my room at 9:30 in the morning, to run away and say nothing. Would never stay at hotel again!!!

Not bad, but why all the walking? My wife and I stayed at the Circus Circus in late July 2024. For starters, Reno itself has clearly seen better days. It seems rather run down and not a whole lot of "excitement" to the downtown like I'm sure it used to be. That said, while our stay at Circus Circus wasn't completely awful, I'm not sure I've ever seen a hotel that had a worse layout. The only checkin area is on the casino side of the street and nowhere near the parking garage and sky tower. I'm very glad my wife and I weren't disabled or brought our luggage with us to check in, as that would have been an absolute nightmare. Another reviewer mentioned it, but the parking garage elevator was absolutely disgusting. It smelled nasty, it took forever, and we were afraid to use it. So see the pro tips below for ways to avoid using it! Once we checked in, we were told we were in the Sky Tower, which felt like it is a mile away from where you check in. You need to take an escalator up (though to be honest, I didn't notice if an elevator could get you where you need to be), do a ton of walking to get to the Sky Tower side, go up some stairs just past the fitness center (the elevator there appears to be off limits), do a bunch more walking, then eventually end up at the Sky Tower elevators to get to your desired floor and room. Did the Sky Tower side used to be another hotel or something? It looked like there used to be a lobby there, but it was completely deserted. To be fair, our room was pretty good, it was a high floor room that faced west, so we got a decent view of the sunset on the mountains. The room wasn't what I would call extravagant, but it was decent and at least had a small refrigerator. The soaps in the bathroom were nice. Pro tip time! 1) In the parking garage, park on level 2B. This will put you near the passageway between the casino side and the Sky Tower side and you won't need to use the nasty garage elevators. When you first go into the garage, you won't see level 2B (if I remember correctly, you'll see 2A and 2C). You need to drive up a couple of levels and then start heading toward the "Exit", and then eventually you'll see level 2B as you're descending in the garage. 2) Do like I did and don't bring your luggage to check in! Just bring yourself and very small things, then once you know where you'll be, only then grab your luggage. 3) The Circus Circus, Eldorado, and Silver Legacy are all connected without having to step outside, and there are tons of choices for food, casino games, etc. So especially if it's hot outside, beat the heat and just walk through all three of them. 4) There is a HUGE resort fee at the Circus Circus, $44.93, that you need to pay when you check in. So like in our case, our room rate was actually double what they say it is on the website. So be aware of this and that there is no way to get around it. Why is this practice not illegal by now?

A Few Snags, Quickly Corrected. Upon checking into our first room, we discovered bird poop on the inside window sil most likey leftover from the previous guest's parrot. We informed the front desk and quickly put us in another room and waived the upgrade fee. We did kill 2 large horse flies in our new room which was a bit odd considering we were in the deluxe king suite on the top floor. Overall, the room was good. Lots of room. Quiet. Easy access to all the restaurants, games, and arcade. Good place for kids.
