Colorado’s Eastern Plains: Historical Sites and Nature Hikes on the Prairie
The Eastern Plains is Colorado’s largest region, stretching from the Kansas border to the edge of the Rockies. Travelers passing through are often pleasantly surprised to discover the plains’ plethora of historical sites and some of the state’s best nature hikes.
Just 20 minutes away from the inn sits Burlington, one of the dry-land farm communities established along the railroad in the 1880s. Many 19th-century buildings still line the streets of its Old Town—a living-history museum wherein performers take to saloons and evoke the Wild West by producing cancan shows, staging gunfights, and refusing to pay cell-phone bills. Visitors can tour Burlington’s original jail cells, an old railroad depot, and a two-story manor filled with period antiques—and in the summer, travel atop horse-drawn carriages to the town’s National Historic Landmark, the Kit Carson County Carousel. Built in 1905, it’s still operational, with 46 wood-carved horses and giraffes that still bear their original coats of paint.
