Depoe Bay, Oregon: Whale Watching next to the World's Smallest Harbor

Through a narrow, rocky chasm along Oregon's coast, you can find the world's smallest navigable harbor; it's just 6 acres wide. The town that contains this harbor is Depoe Bay, and it's tiny too, with fewer than 1,500 residents. A natural sea wall protects the little town, and its main shopping streets closely follow the coastline, with nice views of the Pacific nearly everywhere you look.

There are a number of natural phenomena drawing visitors to Depoe Bay. One is the Spouting Horn—a natural underwater cave that transforms incoming waves into a powerful spray that often soaks Highway 101, which runs through Depoe Bay. Another is the pod of gray whales that swims through the bay 10 months out of the year, making the area popular for whale-watching excursions. There's even a state park, the Whale Watching Center, which sets up visitors to watch and understand whale migration. Close to 20,000 whales swim past the center before June annually.

Was a great location. We were graciously upgraded to a king since we were mid week. Had a nice restaurant on site. Depoe Bay is a long-time favorite. Over all a great experience.

Overall meh.... 1st we hear they are going to tear down & rebuild starting oct 2024. I hope so! We got room 69. Near a handicap ramp & up 1/2 flight stairs. 1st pic with chairs & rug. Shower faucet needs replacement. Screen in small window missing so flies came in. With All of these units you share balcony with 1 neighbor. See pics. Now if you have another couple friends or family with you, sharing is fine but we opened for some air & saw neighbors 2 ft away. We moved to #73 & he said will try & keep #72 empty for us. This is end bldg & no pets. Adults only. All seems to be working here & shower separate from tub. Has a sink in kitchen area. The view is better in the upper units but we still see ocean from this one. Bushes in front. To get to beach you need to drive fogarty creek park then walk under road. Easy flat walk. I wouldnt stay here again but will try new when built. Sharing doorway to deck is weird esp if strangers are next door.

Granddaughter gave it a thumbs up My Granddaughter and I spent the night here and loved our room, the view, access to the beach…we hope to come back again before the summer is over. The hotel is an older hotel but it was very clean and the beds were very comfortable. I would recommend staying here to any of my friends and family.

Disappointing … This location is wonderful, however the hotel is aged and in disrepair. We were told it is to be demolished in October and replaced with a new Cambria hotel. We found we only had one bedside lamp and were told by the desk that they could not temporarily borrow one from another room per “policy”. It was pointed out that had we booked a double Queen room rather than a King room we would have had two lamps. The hotel was nowhere near capacity. Both Clarion and Cambria are affiliated with Choice Hotels. It seems apparent that Choice Hotels chooses not to value customer satisfaction.
