Destin, Florida: Sugar-Sand Beaches and Lively Fishing Scene

Think of Florida, and the image that comes to mind probably looks a lot like Destin. Located on a thin peninsula overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, Destin’s plentiful beaches are some of the whitest in the world due to the sand’s high concentration of fine quartz crystal. Lay down your towel at Crystal Sands Beach or Henderson Beach State Park, or go swimming and snorkeling at Jetty East Beach. At Gator Beach, you can watch alligators in action from the safety of a beachside bar and grill.

In addition to its beaches, Destin is famous for its fishing culture. The town was established by a fisherman named Captain Leonard Destin and still goes by the nickname “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.” Any time of year, you can find well over 100 charter boats (and a few party boats) in Destin Harbor, ready to take tourists out on the water. Every autumn, the Destin Fishing Rodeo draws more than 30,000 fishermen hoping to lure in sailfish, marlin, wahoo, and king mackerel—not to mention a big cash prize.

Fabulous! The historic cottages are wonderful! Very clean and spacious. Great location - direct access to beach right across the street. The best thing though, is the staff! They are all very professional and personable and so very accommodating and kind. I had to extend my stay due to illness, and everyone was so kind and caring. They checked in on me and even left me a gift bag. I look forward to a longer (healthy) stay next year!

Disappointing. We stayed here through timeshare about 9 years ago and was pleased with it for the most part except for a very noisy heat pump keeping me awake at night. So we decided to try again with our timeshare(wyndham) luggage etc. were sitting around. We were told the resort had been remodeled. Interesting because yes the carpet was changed and the living room and bedroom furniture. As well as the bathroom floor was tiled and I guess the bathroom cabinet and shower. This was not done well. There was a gap between the countertop and sink that had about a 1/2 inch gap and there was black mold all the way around. As well as mortar that ended up on the floor and and not cleaned up so it's there. Not the best tile finish job in the shower and floor. The refrigerator has some rust but the microwave was really rusty. They both worked fine but I don't call this a remodel. Plus under the sink area was bare unattractive wood that hadn't been covered. If you are on the bottom floor, you hear walking, showering, toilet flushing. The landscaping is in need of some removal of stunted shrubs. The laundry area needs a good vacuuming. Not cleaned the whole time we were there. It's a small resort which if fine for us. Means you don't have a lot of walking to do. but I think some attention to detail is due.

Small but Sweet We had our first visit to the Beach Street Cottages in June 2022. It was highly recommended by a family friend and booked through my parents for a family trip. We had the 2 units (upstairs and downstairs) in building 19 for 6 adults ranging from 70's to 40's and 2 children (13 & 10). My first impressions were that the units were SMALL but clean and decently maintained & furnished. There was one small bathroom with a single vanity/sink, one bedroom with king or queen bed (not sure), open bunks (no door) in the hallway with single mattresses, and a fold out couch in the one main room. The kitchen was along one wall of the main room and there was a coffee table and a small round dining table. Very small. The building we were in was right outside the pool which was convenient for my kids. The pool is very small and felt crowded at times, and there was no hot tub. I think there was a small game area (big chessboard, fire pit) on the other side of the complex but we didn't use it. There was a center courtyard on either side of the pool with building close around the courtyard. 2 gazebos and a handful of grills. Well landscaped with lovely flowers and bushes and tons of lizards for the kids to chase. I was VERY concerned with the fact that this place is across the street from the beach. It was not ideal but not as bad as I expected. Drivers always stopped for pedestrians and there was a crosswalk just at the end of the complex. There was a door and a set of wooden stairs on the other side of the road to access the beach. For beach service for the units, you can use Ride On surf school which is set up on the beach behind Capt. Daves (the restaurant directly across from the Beach Street Cottages). The parking lot is shared with a restaurant (Kenny D's) and parking is an issue. Each unit gets one spot so if you are sharing with more than one family, someone has to park at the Majestic Sun about 10 - 15 min away. On Karaoke night for Kenny d's (Wednesday) there were no open spots for cottage residents because restaurant patrons were filling the lot. The beach area across the street is completely adequate and you can see the fireworks from the harbor on Thursday nights. It's the usual Destin lovely white, clean sand and clear water (depending on the time of year and mother nature). We had 2 red flag days with big, rough waves, one day when the ocean was as calm as a bathtub, and 4 days with yellow flags and decent waves for kids to surf or paddle in the shallows. I would likely not stay here again on my own but I wouldn't argue if my family booked it for another trip. For my family, the unit was too cramped. Not enough places to hang swimsuits and store beach stuff without tripping on it. The unit didn't have in-unit laundry with was a HUGE annoyance. Laundry was behind the pool and free to use but machines were almost always full and several times I had people remove my wet towels from the dryer. Not having the ability to do laundry or dry beach towels was a big deal to me. We also like a bigger pool, hot tub access, and direct beach access.

Reconsider staying Had made reservations months ago and requested specific building. Was told no problem even called days before arrival to verify reservations and assured no problem. Guess what showed up and told building taken placed in building directly across from laundry room and pool. Apparently Wyndham is renting to the public and owners are not able to get priority booking anymore. First night in a fight broke out among renters and we discovered that they have no onsite security. Front desk said to call 911. What!? Washing machines and dryers broken down and people lined up to use 3 that still worked. We have been coming here for past 20 years and was one of our favorite resorts but like Emerald Grand has gone downhill.

Another Quiet Escape to the Beach Another great escape to the Beach Cotteges. We got to enjoy warmer weather and the beach this trip. Very nice sands to walk the ocean. Still a quiet get away for us. More resturaunts open within walking distance. Quick drive down to the Majestic Sun to use the gym and get a message. Rooms are nice a clean.
