Edisto Island, South Carolina: Atlantic shorelines between Colleton and Charleston

Edisto Island, one of South Carolina's Sea Islands, offers views and shorelines of the Atlantic and pleasant year-round temperatures, that travelers seek for their holidays visiting places like Myrtle Beach, but thanks to its relative distance from any larger city, remains less touristy than its more popular counterparts. Many historical plantations, famous for past production of long-staple Sea Island cotton, still remain in the area, offering tours of what remains of the sites. Other than those, guests of the island can visit the Serpentarium, Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve or Edisto Beach State Park. For history lovers, the two most recommended attractions include Indian Mound Trail and Edisto Island Museum.

About 50 miles away is the historic city of Charleston, steeped in old-fashioned Southern glamour. Some antebellum mansions have been converted to fine-dining restaurants where you can partake in elegant dinners amid vintage décor. Elsewhere in Charleston’s historic district, take a stroll through the public garden and historic landmark known as the Battery & White Point Gardens. After the Civil War began, this waterfront park was fortified with Confederate cannons and mortars, some of which are still on display today.

Great option on Edisto Beautiful Island! 1st (and def not last) trip to Edisto. The resort is really the only show in town. The island is sleep with lovely beaches and quaint restaurants. The resort is beautifully laid out. Not on a beach. Has tennis courts, pool, mini putt and playground. Lots of keep kids busy. Rooms are nice enough. There are roaches around but they are part of the ecosystem there and outside the rooms we found. If one gets in, you just push it out. You will need a car. A shuttle from the resort would be nice. There is a dedicated beach with a pavilion (with washrooms) but there are lots of beaches to explore. Would def go back.

Not for us This is the only vacation destination we have ever left early. The island is beautiful and we were warned about "Edis-Slow", but we literally could not find one thing to do besides SIT. Only one restaurant was open. You can hear every sound from the rooms around you. We went to look at the sunset and could not see our arms due to the swarms of mosquitos (we go to many other beach areas in the SE, so can compare to other destinations). The bike paths are not shady or in good shape -- nor were the rental bikes. If you like beautiful bike paths, live music, an assortment of restaurants, frozen beverages, this is not the place. The upside was bringing home live blue crabs that were perfect from a nearby seafood shop.

Nice place, but other issues We've stayed here before and enjoyed it enough to return. We booked a 5 night stay through RCI. First, when we arrived, they had no record of our reservation, despite all my confirmation emails. After about 1/2 hour, we were able to check in, although we had to pay a cleaning fee (first time that had happened.) The unit was very nice (Marsh Point) and a very short walk to the beach, which was great for morning and evening walks. The only issue with the unit was that it had an exceptionally small bathroom. Not even enough room to keep our toiletries in there - had to carry them in and out. The living/dining are was huge, so no real need for such a tiny bathroom. The last issue is the sales pitch. We were talked into it for a "refund" of our RCI exchange fee (probably a credit.) It went on forever and we made clear that we were happy with RCI and didn't need another membership. It's now been a month with 2 followup phone calls and still no credit on our account. Love the area and the resort, but customer service seems to be lacking across the board. Unfortunate.
