Bermuda: British Whimsy Meets Island Living in the Middle of the Atlantic

Life on the secluded Atlantic island of Bermuda centers on the capital city of Hamilton, where buildings awash in gentle pastels hug the harbor. The island is a part of the British Commonwealth, and reminders of England abound; check out the sculptures (and well-sculpted rose bushes) at Queen Elizabeth Park, admire the stained glass at the Anglican Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, or take afternoon tea at one of the city’s many tearooms. The main drag, Front Street, is a prime spot to browse souvenirs.

The island is full of natural wonders beyond the comforts of the capital. Pink-sand beaches stretch across much of the coastline, making beautiful backdrops for sunbathing and reef-diving expeditions. The island’s volcanic past is evident at Crystal Caves, where you can explore underground pools and delicate rock formations that were shaped over millions of years.

Less than stellar lunch service We are locals and I had called a week ago to reserve a table for 3 outside overlooking the pool/ocean with a friend who is not well at the moment. I confirmed that the a la carte menu was available and was told yes. We arrive on time at 1pm to find no tables set up outside and no staff around. I walked to the dining room , found a waiter and asked about sitting outside so we could enjoy the view, he was less than enthusiastic but said yes we could but that it was buffet only today. As we had wanted a la carte(which I had been told would be available) we made a quick exit and instead had lunch at Cafe Lido along the beach where we had an excellent lunch with a wonderful view, a la carte menu and first class service. Coco Reef you have to up your game as we will not be back until you do!

Small and friendly - just what we like The hotel is undergoing substantial updating that is being done in a controlled and sensitive manner by the relatively new and very approachable manager. This hotel has about 64 rooms with plenty of garden space, all facing the stunning Elbow Beach. It has the “bones” of being the most beautiful, intimate and peaceful place on Bermuda and in just the 2 weeks that we have been here, we can see the changes day by day. We haven’t been subject to any work noise or interference at all as the Manager is keen that this be a priority. Most of the rooms have already undergone a complete renovation and we were very pleasantly surprised on arrival. The beds a very comfortable and the decor is light and airy. The rooms are spacious and there are plenty drawers and wardrobe space. The restaurant staff are so warm, friendly and cannot do enough for their guests. If you are looking for sunshine and sanctuary - this is the ideal location. My husband has enjoyed getting out of bed and running along the beach, watching the sunrise each morning, before jumping into the sea - what a way to start the day _.

The best beach resort at a great value! We loved our week at Coco Reef! If you love the beach this is the resort for you. We had a renovated “oceanfront” room and we had an amazing view of the ocean from our patio. The king bed was very comfortable and the AC worked well. The maid came every single day and we never saw her she was so stealthy! You can walk to a market at the bottom of the hill for snacks and drinks to keep in the room since there is a mini fridge. We also walked to coffee at Lattes one day-25 mins each way but the “croffles” were yummy! The beach is clean and there were always plenty of umbrellas available. The pool was undergoing maintenance our first 2 days but we only sat at the beach anyway. The sand is SO soft and the water is perfect. You can walk for about a half a mile West along the beach until the rocks/cliff cut you off. We ate at the restaurant 5 out of 6 mornings and while it’s not cheap the food is good and the view is unbeatable. The service was always top notch. (The Lido Cafe next door is excellent for dinner but a bit pricey. Book a table on Open table yo be safe.) A waiter will bring you drinks on the beach and they’re good too. He was always circulating from about 10-5. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. The public beaches are crowded and no more beautiful for swimming and lounging. This is a great resort for beach lovers. It might be less than ideal for younger kids and mobility challenged folks as it’s a steep walk down to the lower buildings and beach. The front desk folks were always very helpful with taxis and suggestions. Hamilton is a 10 minute cab ride and St. George’s is 30 mins. Beware on Wednesday nights it can be hard to get a cab because of Harbour Nights. We are at Tom Moore’s Tavern which was very good too.
