Fairfax, Virginia: College Town with 18th-Century Buildings near Washington, DC

The city of Fairfax sits in northeast Virginia’s uppermost corner, across the Potomac from Washington, DC (it takes about 30 minutes to drive from one to the other). Fairfax provides a pleasant, subdued contrast to the big city. In fact, Forbes ranked Fairfax third among America’s Top 25 Towns to Live Well. It’s home to George Mason University and several historical buildings, especially in the Old Town district. Here, you can see the original Fairfax County Courthouse, which was built at the turn of the 18th century.

Today, many of these centuries-old structures have been repurposed to house museums and art galleries. Fairfax Station Railroad Museum occupies a depot that played a significant role in transporting medical supplies during the Civil War. At this kid-friendly museum, you can check out old railway lanterns, model trains, and old-fashioned cabooses. The Old Town Hall has been transformed into a gallery by the Fairfax Art League. Head to the Old Town Plaza and you can browse boutiques or dine on tapas at local wine bistros.

It was a wonderful stay! The room was clean and spacious. The complimentary breakfast was wonderful and filling with a lot of variety! The pool is only open from 5pm-10pm, but that was perfect because we were in the city during the day. The in room jacuzzi was very clean and worked perfectly! Overall great experience and would do it again!

Average The place is well located for people who wants to visit GMU. The rooms are big and quiet. There are several restaurants near by and places for renting cars. The only negative thing is that the rooms smell to cigarette.

Exceeded my expectations This was my second stay at this hotel and it just keeps getting better. Easy to find and close to shopping, restaurants and George Mason University. Rooms are very CLEAN, including the kitchenette with stove, oven, microwave, mini 'fridge and dishes. Everything you need for a multiple night stay is here. The front desk and room staff were very courteous and helpful with directions. The bed was comfortable and bedding was clean. Rooms were very quiet even though it is on a busy road. No loud partying from other guests and no suspicious activity around the perimeter of the hotel. Plenty of parking on the property. I've had 2 separate wonder stays at this hotel, why stay elsewhere? I'll be back on my next visit to the area. :-)
