Boston’s Back Bay: Victorian Architecture and Historical Landmarks on the Charles River

Boston’s Back Bay used to be just that—a literal bay that extended into the Charles River. In the mid-1800s, developers added landfill and created the grid-style neighborhood that remains today. Victorian brownstones and kempt gardens line the wide avenues of this waterside enclave that lies just west of Beacon Hill. Boston is a highly walkable city with a good public transportation system to boot, so you’ll be able to get to several other neighborhoods as well, including the Boston Common, which is the starting point for the famed Freedom Trail.

Often called the Rodeo Drive of the East, Newbury Street stretches eight blocks east from Massachusetts Avenue to Arlington Street. The quaint tree-lined street is home to dozens of high-end retailers such as Chanel and Cartier, as well as vintage boutiques and consignment shops. Between Newbury and the Charles lies some of the most desirable real estate in Boston; the historic brownstones are worth checking out. The Esplanade, a 3-mile jogging path along the Charles, is especially popular in the summer.

Disappointing Stay We all know that every hotel can have a bad day and for that reason I tend to avoid writing negative reviews. However, I would be doing a disservice to other travelers if I did not share my experience at the Copley Square Hotel in Boston. My husband and I arrived early at the hotel with the intention of checking our bags and valeting the car before setting off to have lunch and wait for our 3:00 check in. We were greeted at the reception desk by friendly front desk agent, who told us there was a good chance that we could check in early. Upon looking at our reservation his demeanor changed and he told us our room was indeed not ready. We returned to the hotel several hours later and were greeted by a different agent who checked us in. He told us we were being put in an accessible room because we had booked through Expedia and those (third party) bookings were given the rooms that were left after direct bookings. We explained that we had not booked through Expedia but through the portal of our travel credit card, which we pay a high annual premium for. We also explained that we paid full price for the room- and even if we hadn’t, should travelers be penalized for finding the best price for accommodations?!?! Really! The accommodations were 3 stars at best. The room smelled as if it had been a smoking room for years and the only means of hanging clothes was a tiny wall rack with 4 hangers, which was mounted 3 ft from the floor. I understand that this is an important amenity in an accessible room, but as I mentioned we did not book an accessible room. When I turned the shower on the handle broke off. Fortunately for us a super nice maintenance guy was able to repair it - temporarily at least. Upon check out we shared our displeasure with Trinity at the front desk. He listened to our concerns and was apologetic for our negative experience. If it weren’t for our positive interactions with Trinity and Chris in maintenance I would give the hotel 1 star. Needless to say, we won’t be back.

The beautiful and historic Fairmont Copley Hotel. The Copley Square Hotel is magnificent. The room was charming. The staff were more than helpful and very cheerful. The concierge, Joe, was extremely knowledgeable. He spent a great deal of time explaining the highlights of the city, the history of the hotel, and in particular the little story behind the beautiful chocolate lab stationed in front of his check-in counter. Joe went above and beyond when he gave us a signed copy of the children's book about the beautiful dog for my great-granddaughter, Josie. Many thanks! We will be recommending your hotel to all our friends.

Worth way more than the price Great location and the service for the price was outstanding. The room was cleaned every day a fresh towels were provided. The mattress was perfect, best sleep I’ve had in a hotel. Staff was attentive a very friendly. It’s the place I’ll stay when I go to Boston again.
