Topeka, Kansas: Capital City with Legendary Past

Topeka lies along the Kansas River, about an hour west of Kansas City. It’s home to the Kansas State Capitol, a classical stone building topped with a massive copper dome. The structure is well worth a visit, both for the history and notable works of art found here. These include a pair of famous murals by John Steuart Curry and a bronze statue entitled Ad Astra. Depicting a Kansa warrior, the piece takes its name from the state motto, Ad astra per aspera—“To the stars through difficulties.”

One of the most famous names in Topeka history is Oliver Brown, the plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case that ended segregation in American public schools. The Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site is housed in the formerly segregated Monroe Elementary School. The building has been restored to its 1954 appearance and contains numerous self-guided exhibits, including a 30-minute film that chronicles the years leading up to the case.

Non existent housekeeping No housekeeping. Stayed 4 nights and we didn't get anyone cleaning the room or any knock on the door. Housekeeping service is non existent. We had ants on the very first day we were there. We had to keep getting stuff from the front desk, like towels and toilet paper. I asked if there was any housekeeping and the lady at the front desk said that they should be in the rooms every other day. NOT ONE DAY DID THEY COME BY TO DO THEIR JOB. We will not be staying there again. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Manager needs replacement and crew training Was treated like I was a bother to ask to see the rooms. Possibly hiding something. When I complained of the treatment manager said he wasn’t interested in my patronage. The manager needs to be replaced and crew trained on simple guest care. Marriott will never have my companies patronage again. This is by far the worst hotel experience we have ever had. Please find new management!

Meh My mom and I are staying here now and we are underwhelmed. The lobby area is very nice, clean and inviting, and the front desk staff have been very nice. The first room they gave us only had a king bed despite us requesting two queens so they moved us to the second floor without an issue. Upon entering the room there was an odor; it smelled like urine or wet carpet. The bathroom smells like mildew and the bathroom door only shuts if you slam it. The balcony door requires two people to slide it as it appears very old. The room itself looks recently updated but the offensive smells makes it feel icky. Thankfully we are just passing through and will only have to stay for one night.

Definitely would stay here again My husband and I are Titanium Elite Bonvoy members, so we travel pretty frequently. I chose this Courtyard property for a one night stay on our way from Kentucky to Colorado. The property was well-maintained, the room was spotless, and the location was quiet, but within easy walking distance of several restaurants and shopping options. It is located just to the side of a mall, but because of the hours of the mall, it is very quiet in the evening and morning. We had our service-dog-in-training with us and found the hotel to be very dog friendly with several grassy areas available to walk him on. I would definitely stay here again and would not hesitate to recommend it to others.

This place should not be waving the Marriott flag We need Negative stars! I've taken call girls to nicer hotels than this dump!! it completely shocks me that this location is a courtyard by Marriott while checking in after 9 o'clock one evening I proceeded to unload all my bags get my room set up then I finally take my shoes off and the entire carpet is soaking wet the Ptac has been leaking. when I called downstairs there was no sense of urgency to get me moved nor really sincere apology while in my replacement room it was extremely hot since the AC was not working when I turned it on, a strong odor blew out and filled up the room I removed the filters and proceeded to clean them myself because of the funk and the lack of airflow. The very next morning I discovered that my patio door had been left pen by either the previous guest and or house cleaning I Was completely unaware that the room 217 had a patio and the night before I could not see it since it was dark but I'm glad I didn't because it was filthy for cigarettes and even lighters from the previous guest Every horizontal surface had a thick layer of dust, shower head has never been cleaned, peoples pubic hair all over the bathroom The next morning as I was checking out early since I had planned to be there all week there was really no apology it seem like the The staff just didn't care I spoke to a manager who had a tag that stated general manager but he talks more of a chef and a cook uniform he just apologized but he never did ask what can I do to make it btter or what he could do to help me with my situation as I was leaving. He made no attempt and clearly that's why the hotel isn't such a horrible condition because management doesn't care therefore there is no pride and passion to trickle down to the staff I must say the Homewood suites by Hilton is such a newer well-kept and nice property and I'm glad to continue my weeklong stay here
