Minnesota’s North Shore: Craggy Cliffs and Cobblestone Beaches on Lake Superior

Lake Superior’s North Shore runs up from Duluth, Minnesota, to the tip of the lake at Thunder Bay, Ontario. In the winter months, fishers bare the cold winds as their rods caste-off from frozen shores. Split Rock Lighthouse serves as the area’s unofficial icon, a relic from 1910 that’s built on top of a 130-foot cliff.

Farther inland, dense forests and hills give way to rivers and waterfalls, many of which are accessible by hiking and mountain-biking trails. There are dozens of popular fishing spots where anglers catch walleye, smallmouth bass, and trout.

Great! Choose carefully, as the lodge is so much different from their cottages. We chose the cottage as we had 4 people, …and so glad we did. New buildings, Great Lake views and solitude. Well- furnished and appointed, very helpful warm staff (after all, this is a family owned place.) Free s’more supplies in lobby! Now where else does one get that! Just a few miles from gorgeous Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry State Park (easy paved access walk to 3:waterfalls!), and good dining either in the lodge restaurant OR in their,bar/cafe/liquor store just 1/4 up back at the main road. We skipped the $8 Scandinavian morning buffet, as it was cold food plus toasted bagels. Found a super rocky uphill hike of less than 1/2 mile to (unmarked) Wolf Rock lookout. Take the unsealed but smooth wide county road next to the Rustic Inn cafe (back 1 mile past Gooseberry). Go on it for 1-2 miles, straight ahead (ignore the right turn option) and park in the lot at the trailhead on the right. Take the trailhead North (on the right) and you will be soon rewarded with great outlooks at 3 ledges all within a half mile! You will see only the occasional hiker of the Lake Superior Trail. Wonderful experience and no grueling 10 mile hike required! And then eat at the Rustic Inn cafe, and take home one their delicious $24 dessert pies which come in 10-15 different options, mostly fruits.

OK but not great The location is very nice. It is pretty much in the middle of everything along the North Shore. The grounds are nice with the fire pit and smore’s and the fish house and lots of outdoor seating. The lodge room we had is in dire need of updating, from the bathroom to the bed. Also no housekeeping so for what we paid we had to find a place to dump our own trash etc. So, location good but we were not impressed with the room accommodations. We probably will pick somewhere else next time.

Good not great This stay was our third time at Cove Point and our last. . The positives beautiful view, lobby is charming. Front desk staff nice but definitely lacking customer service skills. For $280 a night there is no daily housekeeping we have to empty our trash ask for trash bags make our bed no new sheets etc etc. if your not going to offer the full lodge experience then maybe lower room prices. AC is a very large stand alone unit on the floor super loud and yes I get it it’s north shore but it is humid in the rooms. Lastly I’d recommend to management to acknowledge your return customers not with anything other then a verbal greeting and a thank you for choosing Cove Point.
