Galena, Illinois: Quaint Mississippi River Town with Historic Main Street

Galena’s story starts in the mid-19th century, when it first boomed as a mining town and port city on the Mississippi River. Today, the quaint historic district—which Fodor’s says “epitomizes small-town America”—is filled with coffee shops, specialty boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants in 19th-century brick storefronts.

When you’re not shopping, have a drink—Galena is home to a bustling brewing and winemaking scene, with shops and pubs showcasing locally made tipples. History buffs will want to make a stop at Ulysses S. Grant’s home, where the 18th president and Civil War general lived after the war. Head across the river to enter Iowa and check out the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque.

This is a great resort with many amenities! We had a room with a king bed. The room was spacious and clean. There is no Uber from the resort, but we took a cab recommended by the front desk staff and that was great! Can’t wait to stay here again!

So disappointed With the name "Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa" and the cost of a room here, my expectations were high. However, all weekend I felt like I should have booked something different. Check-in was painfully slow. Our room smelled musty/mildewy, and nothing ever seemed to dry out - including the carpet! We were on the bottom level and there was standing water outside our door. The internet was spotty, along with cell service. The TV even went out for a bit. There were some updates to the room, like the sink/vanity and shower, but other items were clearly neglected. Service wasn't great as I had to call multiple times to get fresh towels, since there isn't a daily cleaning due to COVID. We ended up spending very little time in our room and at the resort in general because it just wasn't enjoyable. It's pretty far out from the shopping and activities in Galena as well. Unless you're planning on doing a lot of golfing, I would recommend finding somewhere else to stay!

Disappointment Galena Territory is beautiful. Eagle Ridge is in a prime location. That is about as good as it gets. The condo's are quite dated, ours was very sparcly furnished. The spa is nice, however 3 out of the 4 in our group had facials by a girl in training. The facial was pretty lame. The massage was great. The most upseting aspect of the package was the $40.00 meal ticket each of us received. We ate dinner at the The Highlands Restaurant. Rude hostess and worse food. At the end of the meal the waiter said "they don't have very good food here"....The food had to be prepared early in the day and left in a warming oven...3 out of 4 of us had terrible meals, the other person lucked out because she ordered the fried perch & french fries. This meal had to be prepared on the spot. For the money spent it was definetly a waste.

Golf Resort Nice golf resort in rural IL. Golf is 5*. Played the North course which was tree lined, tight with fast greens. Fairways and greens are in good shape. Resort is nice as well. Rooms are average. Restaurant service good but they are in need of more help to open up entirety of property. Lake views are wonderful.
