Duluth, Minnesota: Scenic Town on Lake Superior

Given Duluth’s ample green spaces and scenic waterfront boasting miles of bike paths, it’s easy to see why it was named the “best outdoors town” in America by Outside magazine in 2014. To a great extent, it owes this distinction to its setting on the western shores of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world.

The lake is the top draw for most visitors: the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor’s Center greets over 400,000 out-of-towners annually. You can go boating and fishing or head to the sandy beaches of the Park Point Recreation Area.

Along the edge of the water, the Lakewalk attracts joggers, bicyclists, and skaters, and provides access to the city’s waterfront pubs, ice cream parlors, and shops. For a night on the town, head to Canal Park, a former warehouse district where buildings have been converted into restaurants, cafes, and stores.
