Hotel at a Glance: El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel

In 1962, El Tropicano was the first hotel to open right along San Antonio’s now-legendary River Walk. Its prime waterside perch made the hotel a popular vacation spot, even attracting the attention of celebrities—Julie Andrews, the Rolling Stones, and President Lyndon B. Johnson all stayed here. Today, location is still one of El Tropicano’s biggest draws; it sits in one of the first sections of the walk, just a short distance from restaurants, bars, and nightclubs along the San Antonio River.

  • Where you’ll stay: Rooms feature flat-screen TVs and free WiFi.
  • Explore the neighborhood: Enjoy quality dining, shopping, and a huge weekend farmers market in the nearby Pearl District.
  • Never miss a workout. The onsite fitness center is stocked with cardio machines as well as free weights.
  • Additional perks: Select options of this Getaway come with a daily breakfast for two.

Downtown San Antonio: Skyscrapers and the Alamo near the Original Riverwalk

In the late 1920s, architect Robert H. H. Hugman designed an urban park around the San Antonio River. He envisioned a space that would be the American version of Venice, where people could shop and dine along the waterfront. The original section, a 2.5-mile riverwalk running through downtown, was completed in 1941. It’s been a vital artery in the heart of San Antonio ever since; so vital, in fact, that the city added two extensions in the 2000s—Museum Reach and Mission Reach—that elongated the riverwalk to 15 miles total.

Located one story below street level, the downtown section of the riverwalk bustles day and night. Stone pathways on either side of the river wind past waterfalls and public art installations on their way to restaurants, boutiques, and lively cantinas that stay open well into the night. Downtown San Antonio is also where you’ll find the Alamo. The historic mission-turned-fortress is one of the most visited tourist sites in the state, thanks to the 1836 battle that made it a symbol of Texas independence. Admission is free for all ages.

Bed Bugs !!! My husband has to go every year for the music teachers convention. We love to stay here however this year we took the family and we thought all was well until we found bed bugs in our house. __. Soon after arriving from our trip my daughter began itching and having rashes. I dreaded the thought of bed bugs so I thought it might be an allergy or mosquito bites. However it wasn’t till this month we began to see the adults appear without fear of being seen. We haven’t left the house or invited anyone over due to Covid 19 lockdown. It was definitely from here. I’m sorry to say next year we won’t be staying here anymore. I want everyone to know this experience has led to quite an expense to get rid of especially during these times so do yourselves a favor don’t stay here!!!! I was on the 3rd floor FYI

Great Customer Service! Great location and price. I appreciate the great customer service I received in a charge issue I had, and that the staff works hard especially when they have to compete with other locations nearby. All in all, great value and staff.
