Crested Butte, Colorado: Small Ski-Resort Town in the Rockies with Authentic Old West Charm

Crested Butte sits at 9,000 feet in southwest Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, where it’s surrounded by some lovely scenery. Aspen groves dot the upper valleys of the town’s namesake peak, as well as fields of fiery Indian paintbrush. In addition to just looking pretty, the gorgeous landscape offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, mountain biking through 750 miles of bike trails, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, fly-fishing, and art and music festivals in the summer months, and skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and dog sledding during the winter months.

After a resort area was built on Mount Crested Butte in 1961, the former coal-mining town emerged as a major ski center, particularly for extreme skiers. Outside of winter sports and activities, Butte has become center for o Despite this rapid transformation, Crested Butte has preserved its roots. Victorian storefronts and art galleries line downtown Elk Avenue, and there’s a famous rum distillery that welcomes visitors year-round. For a glimpse into the town’s history, head to the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum, which has an elaborate diorama that depicts life in the mining days of the 1920s.

Gross like an old motel. The dirty room they put us in wasn’t what we paid for online. We prepaid for a room with a stove. I called the front desk and let the person know and she said because I paid with a 3rd party (Citibank) they couldn’t help plus they didn’t have anymore rooms. I let her know I had already bought groceries on the way. She said she was sorry and if I had booked through them they could have fixed it. I was polite and tried not to let it ruin my day. But I had to stuff everything in a mini fridge and the fridge didn’t get very cold. The microwave smell was so gross. I tried to clean the microwave with Clorox wipes and leave the door open to let it air out even after that, the smell of our room was so bad. The sofa bed was dusty and ancient looking. Lots of dust in the arm creases. We tried bagging the pillows with garbage bags it was so dusty. The big bed was uncomfortable and my back ached at night. The towels were dingy and like sandpaper. (No washcloths) Pink mold in the humidifier. The comforters were like pancakes, like all of the cotton had washed out over time. No robes in the room…I could go on and on. The TV was really old and the stations they had are a joke. The hot tub just bubbled a little..switch broken for the high powered jets. I spoke with a woman who flew in from London and she said her room was horrible too. She was so upset. No robes in her room and it went what she booked. We’ve been staying at this hotel each year for years and I’m just sad it’s so bad now. The staff was nice. The manager tried to make it right by sending up someone to clean again and bring us missing items from the room but we still had to call again later for TP and never rec wash cloths. We didn’t even have a door hanger like everyone else. The manager comped us some drinks and resort fees. I think 30 a day. She mentioned this was all unacceptable. The woman from London was told the same thing I believe. This was like staying in an old motel. We were really homesick day 1 but tried to make the best of it.

Spa-Elevation Spa (below standards) Elevation Spa Review - below standards The spa was very basic. Not plush. More like a gym locker room. Towels were rough. No attendant. Very few amenities. Floors of showers were not clean. Wet sauna was out of order. Massage therapist was good tho.
