Elkton, Maryland: Quaint Town Known as “Elopement Capital”

More than just the “city of love,” Elkton, Maryland was the city of marriage—in the 1920s and ’30s it was famous as “the elopement capital of the East Coast.” As other states in the early 20th century were passing restrictive marriage laws, Maryland (Elkton in particular) became notorious as a destination to get married quickly. Thousands of couples have wed in the small, quaint town, including Debbie Reynolds, Willie Mays, and Pat Robertson. The rush slowed in 1938 when a 48-hour waiting period for marriages passed into law in Elkton. Regardless, the town’s reputation precedes itself—there are still multiple wedding chapels in town where people frequently elope.

Shops and local restaurants line nearby downtown Newark, Delaware’s charming Main Street as well. Staying here, you’ll also be close to attractions such as the 5,000-acre Fair Hill Nature Preserve and the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, a beautiful 60-acre garden, research library, and 175-room house and art museum. If it’s city lights you’re looking for, Philadelphia is less than an hour’s drive away.

This place totally exceeded my expectations! The staff was very nice and friendly. Breakfast was fresh and absolutely delicious. The room was charming and elegant. All around gorgeous property. I felt as if I stepped into a scene of Ann of Green Gables. I absolutely loved it, and God willing, I intend on visiting it again in the near future. Thank you for a wonderful and enjoyable experience. 👍

Find another place We booked a room through Expedia as part of a trip to Longwood Gardens for their Winter Lights display. Since it was freezing outside, we planned to stop by the room first to change. About 30 minutes before our arrival, we got a voicemail saying a water pipe had burst, and they needed to cancel. Okay, no problem—we pivoted and went straight to Longwood Gardens. But before going in, we spent an hour in the parking lot searching for another B&B without any luck. We decided to enjoy the gardens anyway, and they didn’t disappoint! If you’ve never been, you must visit in both spring and winter—it’s incredible. Then, another voicemail came through saying the pipe issue was fixed, and the room was ready. I called back to confirm, but no one answered. It was now 10 p.m., so we headed to Elk Forge, unsure of what to expect. The room was… fine. Let’s just say it could use a little TLC—paint peeling from the ceiling, for starters. When I turned on the faucet to wash up, there was no water. So much for that fixed pipe! Guess they just really wanted my money. The next morning, we went down for breakfast, hoping for a redeeming moment. Instead, we were met with something that felt like a knockoff Fairfield Inn breakfast: scrambled eggs, a waffle maker, juice, and some sad, expired-looking fruit. Looking back, I should’ve stayed at a Marriott. It would’ve been cheaper, had a bigger bed, better food, and—most importantly—running water. Lesson learned!

Couples getaway We are starting to love bed and breakfasts. The house is absolutely beautiful! The beautiful old floors caught my attention as soon as we walked in. Our room was on the 3rd floor and we were glad we didn't have a ton of luggage to carry up. Everything was clean and beautifully decorated. We choose a room with a jacuzzi tub and that was really nice and large. The bed was too hard for me but my husband liked it. The breakfast was yummy and filling. The options were scrambled eggs with cheese and potatoes with everything bagel seasoning. They also always have a waffle maker, toast, bagels and fruit.

A wonderful stay, and bed and breakfast experience. Had an incredible stay at Elk Forge, and really wanted to share our experience. We were down in the Maryland area to visit friends for a special occasion and decided to see if we could make a long weekend out of it. I called up the inn and the owners were able to accommodate us even though it was last minute, we felt lucky because it was the first weekend in a while that they weren't fully booked, so even though they "can" accommodate late bookings I'd suggest booking early if you know you're heading to the area! Elk Forge is really the American dream in a nutshell. It's an old-fashioned country estate that was transformed into a family run business and they do a great job to make your stay very hospitable. We stayed in one of their suites and the place was clean we were tastefully surrounded with murals that depicted the location and some fun motifs from room to room. There were two of us but we just as easily could have brought a few more and we would have had plenty of room! The beds are comfortable, the pillows were plentiful, and the sheets were soft. We went to breakfast in the morning, and it didn't disappoint either. We had fresh fruit, waffles and eggs along with a different meat selection every day. The coffee and tea cart were frequented several times as it was a nice relaxing addition to our breakfast(s). The are was fun to explore and we were able to head to a fun state park with access to large waterways at Elk neck, and also took a fun trip up to Northeast Maryland, which is a cute little town just down the road. We were sitting in the room trying to figure out how we were going to tell our friends and family we weren't coming home but sadly decided we probably needed to get back to reality. Thanks for a wonderful stay, we would highly recommend you to anyone reading!
