Monterey, California: Scenic Beaches and Marine Wildlife on the Pacific Coast

The city of Monterey is located at Monterey Bay’s southern end, in an area considered one of the world’s most scenic thanks to its rugged cliffs and dramatic ocean views. Author John Steinbeck lived for several years in the neighboring town of Pacific Grove, and he immortalized this part of central California in works such as East of Eden and Of Mice and Men. In Cannery Row, Steinbeck depicted the Monterey fish-canning industry at the turn of the 20th century. Today, a tourist destination of the same name houses souvenir shops and eateries right where the sardine factories used to be.

One attraction that you don’t want to miss is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, one of the world’s largest. Its mesmerizing displays include a living kelp forest filled with leopard sharks and wolf eels and a deep-water tank that’s home to schools of bluefin tuna.

To get even closer to the sea, hop on the oceanfront Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail; look out for sea lions sunbathing on the rocks and otters playing in the surf. A variety of whales pass by the shores of Monterey all year; you might also spot a few dolphins from aboard one of the popular harbor cruises. For the best up-close encounters, however, do as the locals do and head to one of the scuba-diving sites nearby. Dive shops on Del Monte Beach offer rentals and lessons—the easily accessible reef system here is popular for first-time divers.

The furniture was nice and the art was beautiful. We had more than enough room for the 2 kids and I. We used the bed and sofa bed, my daughter said the sofa bed was comfy and the blankets were soft. We enjoyed the breakfast, especially the made to order omelettes. It was in a great location, easy to get to and things were nearby. We would definitely like to stay here again.

Truly terrific stay My husband, two daughters (3 1/2, 1 yrs old), and I traveled to Monterey and stayed on the 12th floor in one of the suites. We were absolutely blown away by ALL and I mean all of the staff at this hotel. From the front desk, house keeping, breakfast staff, bartender, and evening staff at the restaurant. I hope management values their exceptional staff and sees just how terrific everyone is-everyone went above and beyond. The hotel itself was very nice, food both morning breakfast and restaurant were exceptional, very delicious. We will definitely stay at another Embassy Suites after this experience and would stay here again. Please don't hesitate to stay here, you won't regret it. It was 10 minutes away from all the tourist attractions. My 3 1/2 year old said her favorite part about our vacation was the hotel ;) I didn't catch everyone's name but Jaci at the front desk and Christian at the morning buffet, wonderful staff.

Mold, Furniture Falling Apart, Elevators Inop Stayed here in July 2024 for a motorcycle race at Laguna Seca and definitely won’t be back. Firstly only 2/3 elevators were working for a completely sold out hotel with over 10 floors. We waited 5-10 mins each time to get an elevator with enough room for the two of us, and ended up using the stairs a few times hiking up to the eighth floor. We got to our room and found the living area table to be very tippy and falling apart, the condition of the chairs and desk were also very poor for a hotel that charged us almost $600 per night. Worst there was mold EVERYWHERE in the bathroom. (See attached photos) An absolute health hazard from a “luxury hotel.” You couldn’t pay me to stay here again.
