Hotel at a Glance: Emerson Inn by the Sea

Emerson Inn’s grounds stretch nearly to the ocean, stopping just across from the rocky shore. In warmer months, guests take the scenery in while playing lawn games or lounging by the heated outdoor pool. Those in Historic and Pigeon Cove rooms get to enjoy the view any time of year, as these rooms face the ocean.

  • Free breakfast brings options like pastries and pancakes, depending on the season.
  • Local seafood and farm-to-table produce shape the menu at the ocean-view Pigeon Cove Tavern (opening in May).
  • Behind the name: The inn’s namesake is poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, who’s thought to have drawn inspiration from his time in Rockport.
  • Downtown Rockport is about 2 miles away; it’s home to beaches and a number of shops.

Rockport, Massachusetts: Seaside Town with Artist Colony and State Park

The rocky shores and maritime culture of Rockport inspired generations of artists, such as Fitz Hugh Lane and Winslow Homer. Today, the fishing economy has waned and the granite quarries that gave Rockport its name have disappeared, but the artistic community remains. More than two dozen galleries showcase local and national artists, and the Rockport Art Association & Museum has supported the arts since 1921.

At the northern end of the city, Halibut Point State Park shows off Mother Nature’s artistry. Craggy granite ledges descend toward water-filled reservoirs, and the massive boulders planted on the beach make good perches for taking in the sights. On a clear day, the seaward view stretches to Maine’s Mount Agamenticus.

Wonderful Time! I went last night and had a wonderful time! The view is lovely, of course. But the service was wonderful and the food was delicious. The lobster appetizer and sliders were seasoned well and tasted fabulous. I noticed there weren’t any recent reviews…I know they have a new chef and owners and want everyone to come try! You won’t be disappointed!!

Great Service Everything was quiet, clean, really functional and we had such a seamless great time (family with small child). The staff helped me fix a stupid mistake I’d made in our reservation. Courteous, professional service well above the usual standard these days.
