Key West, Florida: Dazzling Sunsets, Six-Toed Cats, and Cuban Culture

Located just off Florida's southernmost tip and north of Cuba, the island of Key West is undoubtedly the most famous of the Florida Keys. Frommer's calls it "the land of the eternal vacation." Most tourists come to Key West's gulf-side beaches to snorkel, surf, or fish, but no trip to Key West is complete without a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where the author lived, worked, and kept his six-toed cats. More than 50 descendants of those famous felines still prowl the grounds of the museum to this day.

At nighttime, locals and visitors alike converge on the Mallory Square Dock to watch the sun dip below the Gulf of Mexico, casting swaths of deep orange and pink against the horizon. The spectacle is so breathtaking that it inspires a sunset celebration each night. The dock comes to life with travelling psychics, one-man bands, and food vendors serving fresh-squeezed lemonade and plantain chips.

Good hotel in Key West My family and I enjoyed this hotel in Key West. It’s a motel set up with a decent size pool that my kids used. Nothing to really walk to in the area, but it’s a quick drive to everything as the island is pretty small. There is a trolley to take you to Duval Street, but we elected to use our rental car. The continental breakfast was pretty good and had a pretty good selection. Would stay here again.

Fraudulent transactions and no response from management I visited the hotel in November 2024 and at first enjoyed my stay. When I returned to the UK I noted that the hotel had charged my credit card the full price of the stay 6 times. I have since made a complaint to the senior operations managers Joel Echeveste and Johanay Castrillon and the operations manager Alexander Gutierrez who have all failed to respond to my complaint even after requesting a response on 3 separate occasions. Therefore for a one night stay at the hotel, my credit card has been charged $1,270.18 and the hotel have refused to acknowledge the error and have not issued any refund. I have since filed a fraud report to Miami PD. I would not recommend staying here as the hotel is clearly fraudulently taking transactions from its customer credit cards.

Honest review; very disappointing for a Marriott brand The hotel reached out to me asking about my stay in an email intended to address issues before I receive the Marriott survey. Below is my response to which I received no follow up from. Room# 254 I'm going to keep this short. My stay was very disappointing and here's why. Checked in at 4:00pm with a sizable line and only one functioning computer/terminal. Process took way too long. Guest room is very dark; the only viable light source is the nightstand lamp. Addressed this with someone in management (wearing a red polo) to be told a desk lamp would be delivered and it never was. Wi-Fi is so weak it will not support any video content. Called the front desk to see if it was even working property. Was put on hold indefinitely... The TV in the room has a damaged screen and needs to be thrown out. Bed closest to the air conditioning unit with a metal arm/aperture sticking out 4" from the side that could have easily caused injury. Other bed with a broken down/squeaky box spring/frame. Mattresses in general are too hard, not comfortable at all. Bathroom mirror covered in rust and mold. Hair conditioner was empty. Checking out, the young man said only one short phrase to me, "here you go"? Your crappy room didn't allow me to sleep or effectively work. At $300.00 per night insulting for such poor accommodations, service levels and to be a Marriott brand makes it even worse. Understand who I am: I spend 100+ nights per year in all levels of accommodations. I'm middle aged, not high maintenance and have a great respect for the hospitality industry as a whole. Additionally I travel to Key West 3 or 4 times yearly to conduct business with various clients who many have business ties to property ownership/hotels on the island. I'm giving you the opportunity to rectify the situation/experience I had at your property and room #254. Depending on how you respond will determine my next course of action as to who I communicate my experience with and on what industry platforms. I await your reply,

Great hospitality We recently stayed here for 2 nights. Everything was good and as expected. I specifically wanted to highlight the front desk service which was excellent. We were attended by Binita who was very helpful , diligent, polite and attentive. It was our first visit to Key West and she kindly gave us all relevant information about places to visit and various options that we may consider ,which really helped us optimize our short stay. She stood out completely as compared to other front desk services we experienced at other hotels.

Expensive but ok Expensive, but ok hotel when visiting Key West. Rooms are ok, bathroom simple, bed very good. Breakfast regular American, fitness and pool ok. Very positive on the hourly shuttle bus to the center. From the outside, rooms look rather primitive. Friendly personnel!
