Key West, Florida: Dazzling Sunsets, Six-Toed Cats, and Cuban Culture

Located just off Florida's southernmost tip and north of Cuba, the island of Key West is undoubtedly the most famous of the Florida Keys. Frommer's calls it "the land of the eternal vacation." Most tourists come to Key West's gulf-side beaches to snorkel, surf, or fish, but no trip to Key West is complete without a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where the author lived, worked, and kept his six-toed cats. More than 50 descendants of those famous felines still prowl the grounds of the museum to this day.

At nighttime, locals and visitors alike converge on the Mallory Square Dock to watch the sun dip below the Gulf of Mexico, casting swaths of deep orange and pink against the horizon. The spectacle is so breathtaking that it inspires a sunset celebration each night. The dock comes to life with traveling psychics, one-man bands, and food vendors serving fresh-squeezed lemonade and plantain chips.

Great For NASCAR at Homestead Speedway First, I am forever grateful to the front desk associate for accommodating our early arrival. We had just disembarked from a weekend cruise in Miami and wanted to drop off our luggage and "freshen up" before heading to the race. While the room was clean and modern, there seemed to be a lack of maintenance, with peeling wallpaper and several small deficiencies that did not significantly impact our stay. On the positive side, we really liked the location for our planned activities. The beds and pillows were comfortable, and we slept very well. The television was new and provided plenty of channels. Unfortunately, we were on a short visit and couldn't use the pool or fitness center, but they both looked nice. The biggest disappointment was the breakfast, which was awful. We were expecting the typical free chain hotel breakfast but were disappointed with the offerings. On the first morning, there was a selection of stale bread, bagels, and English muffins. There were no scrambled eggs or even a waffle iron. My wife got a spinach quiche that was half frozen. We were actually entertaining ourselves watching other patrons taking their first bite of the quiche and spitting it out of making hysterical faces. On the second morning, we drove a mile to a Waffle House and skipped the hotel breakfast. Despite the inconveniences, we will likely stay here again for the 2026 race.

$10 for Parking! Warning: $10 charge for parking. This is nonsense. I've staying in countless hotels like this and never had to pay for parking. It's not the norm for hotels in suburban areas with ample room for parking. Now that "nuisance fees" are prohibited, this hotel has come up with another way to grab more money from guests. The front desk says it's on the web and the app, but a charge like this is outside the realm of expectations and it's not reasonable to expect people to read every part of a hotel description prior to booking. I tried to go to another hotel, but they made it complicated to cancel and I had my tired family waiting around late in the evening. This hotel takes advantage of its guests. It's ridiculous!

Newish hotel poorly managed This hotel is newish but very poorly managed. Although it’s not an old hotel the level of cleanliness and lack of maintenance makes it seem much older than it likely is. The staff needs training with respect to customer service. The management needs to run a much tighter ship. Some examples of problems experienced: Coin wash change machine broken for the entire week we were there. Front desk does not keep any change and staff was indifferent to the problem. The area around the hotel is not very safe so it meant we could not go out to get change. Public restroom leaking water over floor, no soap and left in disrepair for the entire visit. Hallways generally not clean. Checked in on the app, but promises made by the staff with respect to room type was not delivered and staff were indifferent to their error with no compensation provided. Common Coffee containers frequently not kept filled Room cleaning not done until requested and then soap, coffee etc. not refilled. Room not vacuumed with dirt left on floors. Shower mouldy. This could be a really nice new hotel with the proper management but as it is being run it will likely end up being in very poor condition in the near future.

A GREAT PLACE TO STAY What a lovely hotel. Rooms are extremely spacious and welcoming. Smart furniture. Huge TV. Shower room also spacious. We slept so well on the 5th floor. The most comfortable beds. I can’t fault this hotel and I would highly recommend it. Breakfast was also served in a spacious room. Nice not to be cramped in a small breakfast room like some hotels. Breakfast with nice bagels, cheese omelette etc.. This hotel deserves more than 5 stars.
