Hotel at a Glance: Fairmont Hotel Macdonald

Built in 1915, the 4-star Fairmont Hotel Macdonald has been a recognizable fixture in the Edmonton skyline for over 100 years. But just next door, not visible in the sky, is another one of Edmonton’s claims to fame. The hotel overlooks The North Saskatchewan River Valley, North America’s largest urban parkway, where over 150 kilometers (about 93 miles) of trails offer plenty of places for jogging, biking, and nature walks.

  • Grab your steak knife and dig into the AAA-rated Alberta beef on the menu at the on-site restaurant, The Harvest Room.
  • Brunch with style at the 100-year-old Empire Ballroom during the hotel’s weekly Sunday brunch.
  • Unwind by steaming yourself in the hotel’s sauna.
  • Shop till you drop: Arguably Edmonton’s biggest draw is about 14 kilometers (about 9 miles) west of the hotel: the largest mall in North America, the West Edmonton Mall.
  • Travel back in time at Fort Edmonton Park; there, costumed reenacters recreate what it might’ve been like to live in Edmonton in the fur-trading days.

Edmonton, Alberta: World-Class Architecture and North America’s Largest Shopping Mall

Surrounded largely by wilderness, Edmonton stands out with unique attractions and eye-grabbing architecture. The Art Gallery of Alberta, for instance, houses 6,000 pieces of art within swirling walls of glass and metal. This futuristic gallery overlooks the charming Sir Winston Churchill Square, where you can spot the Edmonton City Hall building’s Louvre-esque glass pyramid. Edmonton is also home to the Royal Alberta Museum, which features the world’s largest collection of insects, as well as exhibits dedicated to the area’s aboriginal culture and history.

About 20 minutes outside of the city center lies Edmonton’s biggest claim to fame: the West Edmonton Mall. At a whopping 5.3 million square feet, it’s the largest mall in North America. After exploring more than 800 stores and 100 dining options, shoppers can cap off their visit with some family-friendly fun at the ice-skating rink, water park, or blacklight mini-golf course.

Wedding night made even better by Nella! Nella, Concierge truly set up an incredible experience for us. We stayed during our wedding night. The amenity was a beautiful surprise! It was the cherry on top of our most important day. The room had an incredible river valley view. It was newly renovated, amazing shower. All the staff were so very friendly and excited for our wedding. We were treated like superstars. It made things extra special. Thanks for making a beautiful memory for us

So disappointing We had to evacuate jasper park lodge fairmont because of wild fires we left with nothing we were told that we could get clothes from fairmont McDonald's to be fair we went an hour after the time slot however we are homeless and spent a but of the morning with the red cross getting our affairs sorted...jazzy told us that the time slot is gone and she could not accommodate us we told her that we could not come back tomarrow .....and she stood on business.....it's so sad to see that I'm from a sister company and was treated like this we basically have the clothes on our backs and that's it ....I was so disappointed with this interaction no sympathy nothing ......if the tables were turned I guarantee that nobody at jpl would have ever turned then back I can put my head on a block for that.

Nice hotel, but no major benefits of being a Fairmont member and the parking is overpriced. Great hotel, but the area of the town is a bit challenging to get in and out of, which makes it dicey. Parking was either $50 valet or $40 self park, which seems a bit high for Canada. No free breakfast or club lounge with Fairmont Rewards either. In general, I find Fairmonts to be way overpriced and this was no exception, though it was the lowest priced of all hotels we stayed at in the chain, which is saying something.
