Charlotte, North Carolina: Modern Financial Capital with Thriving Art Scene and Southern Cooking

Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina, and it seems to get bigger every year. As one of the country’s major banking centers, it has shiny new skyscrapers popping up all the time. You can recognize the Hearst Tower by the different colors lighting up its façade throughout the year.

While the city has certainly taken a turn toward the modern, relics of the past are still easy to find. Victorian homes with wide front porches line the streets of the historic Fourth Ward, and you can hail a horse and carriage at the corner of Trade and Tyron. The city’s post-Civil War history is on display at the Levine Museum of the New South; check out the award-winning “Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers” installation. Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood (that’s short for North Davidson) is home to the city’s Historic Arts District. Eclectic galleries and live music venues line the streets, and you can catch an improv show here almost every night of the week.

The walls are paper thin I heard people walking above me. Next door I could hear people’s conversation. I left my home to come to chaos. This hotel is not my vibe~

Roaches and Dirty Sheets DONT STAY HERE! - I have to say I was surprised at Marriott because I have always had a good stay at their hotels, with the Fairfied@Charlotte Matthew being the exception. We drove in from out of town and we had a full day planned. We checked in and all looked fine. Got backed to our room very late and we were beyond tired. To make a long story short, we found a live roach in the middle of the night on the nightstand and the sheets were not changed from the guests before because they were so many wrinkles and found substance on them like granuals, of what I dont know. I told the front desk and was told that it was a waterbug, which is wasnt because I know the difference. Tried to tell the clerk that but she didnt want to hear that. Said thet the sheet were wrinkled because they didnt get them out if the dryer quick enough. I dont believe that because it had something on them. They made me feel like they were not listening or even cared. I was not worried about getting my money back, I just wanted them to do something about it because we love Marriott but now I feel that I cant trust them.

Disappointing we won't return We have made several trips to Charlotte as we are searching for a new home, and each time we stay, we like to try a different location within the Charlotte metropolitan area. We had an okay experience at this hotel which I would say is less than average. I am a Bonvoy member and booked this hotel for 3 nights. The day of our arrival I checked in online and waited to receive a text telling me when my room was ready. I never received a text. Upon checking in the front desk person told me the text notice wasn't working. He was polite but I didn't receive a verbal recognition for my membership status as I usually do, and no welcome gift was provided. We got our keys and entered our room. It was pleasant and clean but my back hurt each morning from the well worn mattress that needs to be replaced. The bath towels are thin and also need to be replaced. The walls aren't well insulated, we heard the the person walking above us each morning quite early. We were also awaken by a hotel worker using a drill or screwdriver one morning. The breakfast was not good except for the containers of yogurt I ate. I had uncooked bacon in a breakfast sandwich and my spouse said the day they had sausage it was greasy and terrible. We were told upon check in that we would have service every other day, which was agreeable to us. The day we were supposed to have our room serviced we put all of the towels in the tub so it's easier for the cleaner to take them all at once. We do this anywhere we stay. The trash bins were full, and we didn't care about the sheets so much, but we never got our room serviced when we returned at the end of a business day which was disappointing. My spouse retrieved new towels himself. The staff was courteous but there are other hotels that can handle the basic needs of a traveler better than this experience. We won't return to this hotel in the future.

nice hotel with fairly good hot breakfast I traveled to Charlotte for one night and needed a place to stay. This had pretty good reviews, so I gave it a shot. I was not disappointed. The hotel is fairly clean (though I did notice a couple of spots that were run down), the staff is friendly, and the room that I had was nicely laid out (I received a complimentary upgrade). A full, hot breakfast is included with the room rate. There was not much fresh fruit, but the breakfast was still pretty good. There were a couple of hot selections, there was yoghurt, and there were cereal, toast, and other offerings. A pleasant surprise was that the room rate was relatively low. The staff told me that a wedding (an Indian family) was scheduled for this week at the Fairfield Inn so the hotel was crowded. One thing I noticed is that they lock the entry door at night, clearly a security measure. And, when I came back to the hotel during the day, there was a police car there. Anyhow, I did not feel unsafe while at this facility.
