Fontana Dam, NC: A Majestic Monument to Engineering and Nature

Fontana Dam, located in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, stands as the tallest dam in the Eastern United States. Completed in 1944, this monumental structure was built as part of a vital hydroelectric project by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). With a towering height of 480 feet, Fontana Dam not only serves as a critical power generator but also showcases the ingenuity and perseverance of the wartime era. Overlooking the serene waters of Fontana Lake, the dam offers breathtaking views of the surrounding forested mountains, drawing visitors from all over to witness both its historical significance and natural beauty.

The area surrounding Fontana Dam is rich in outdoor recreation, offering hiking, fishing, and scenic drives. Fontana Lake itself provides opportunities for boating and is a popular spot for both leisurely cruises and more adventurous water activities. The nearby Appalachian Trail passes through the region, providing a link to the broader heritage of the Smokies. Fontana Dam’s role in the development of the region's infrastructure and its connection to the history of the TVA makes it not just a scenic destination but a living testament to the area’s industrial and natural heritage.

Okay visit The location is wonderful and peaceful. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. We ate at Hazel’s most mornings and a couple evenings. The food was excellent. The bar has a nice selection and we enjoyed sitting out by the fireplace. Unfortunately, the cabin itself was a let down. The beds and pillows were uncomfortable and the bedspreads were full of other people’s hair and debris. They don’t wash the bedspreads between guests. There were no hangers and only one extra blanket for the 3 bedrooms. Pretty sure it was dog hair on that blanket. Glassware in the kitchen wasn’t clean, obviously just rinsed and put back. Bathrooms had zero toiletries so we had to go buy our own soap. Water pressure was very good in the shower but the hot water ran out fast for a cabin hosting 6 people. Bathrooms need upgrading, or at least hooks to hang the towels.

Restaurant hours I was very disappointed with the hours of the restaurants. They close when they want. Saturday the 19th of October 2024 we got to Hazels at 8:17 pm. We were told they close at 9 and quit seating at 8:30 but since they had had several large groups they were not seating anymore. So we went to the other restaurant and they were closed as well even though the front desk said they closed at 9. We were 22 miles away from the closest restaurant and had to settle for a microwave hamburger from the general store. VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Campground ok but Staff is amazing! 15 years we've stayed at the Campground. It is adequate but the staff at the Resort Check In, cannot be beat! Specifically Beth! Thanks for all your time and care. The rates have been exceptional but supposed to skyrocket next year. Made reservations for 2025.

Great experience and fun vibes! Went to Fontana Marina for a wedding reception and Colby the bartender was awesome! I really can tell Brandon and the crew down there at the Marina are putting in hard work and it shows with how nice the marina looks! The pontoons are brand spanking new and fun to drive around! Colby really crafted up my rum drinks and had great stories to tell! Colby for prez!

Fontana village is an awesome summer vacation Fontana village is amazing. We stayed in 1 bedroom cabin and it was clean and spacious. Hiking in the area is awesome. The staff is friendly and helpful. We went to the pool, played mini golf, and explored the resort. We ate at Hazel’s and Quill’s. Both were very good and would recommend. Live music at Quills every night we were here. Would recommend to anyone for a summer getaway! They are currently updating the cabins and can’t wait to see how they turn out next time we visit.
