Dahlonega, Georgia: Small-Town Retreat with Gold-Rush Past

Dahlonega’s name comes from a Cherokee word meaning “gold” or “yellow,” and it’s a testament to the town’s rich past. In 1828, Dahlonega sprang up seemingly overnight when miners struck a rich vein of gold. You can see a 5-ounce gold nugget and rare gold coins at the Dahlonega Gold Museum, which is housed inside Georgia’s oldest courthouse, or pan for gold yourself at Crisson Gold Mine, located right in town.

Downtown Dahlonega is full of boutiques and restaurants catering to all kinds of tastes. For further indulgence, hit the Dahlonega Wine Trail, whose five wineries offer tours, tastings, and spectacular views. Dahlonega is also within easy reach of the Appalachian Trail and Chattahoochee National Forest. It’s also just 20 miles from Amicalola Falls, one of the highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi.

Can’t wait to come back The cabin was breathtaking love the privacy and the peace and quiet scenery. As for the staff Stephanie is an amazing waitress and host !!! Her attentiveness, friendliness, and efficiency in serving is top tier I got great energy from her and it felt as if she was family she truly cares about making people making this feel like a home away from home providing excellent service. The chef, matched her energy with his style of cook everything was delicious the steak medium well was cooked to perfection , presentation, and quality of the food was spot on. I also Highly recommend the salad

Mold and smell downstairs and broken thermostat. Unit seven at Forrest Hills, the hot water The hot water only worked for two minutes in the hot tub so we had to have a chili bath._ Also, the thermostat did not work at all upstairs or downstairs for goodness sake. My poor baby got sick and it was 68°. We usually keep our home 75° or warmer and she was crying and coughing all night. I myself got a sore throat. The after hours maintenance number wouldn’t answer. I have a chronic illness and I’m sensitive to mold exposure. The shower downstairs had black mold (which is the most toxic and dangerous form for your immune system) in the door trim. It smelled awful downstairs, but it was a little better upstairs where we chose to sleep instead. The bedspread tops had pulls in them and were so itchy they definitely need to be updated. The pillows were lumpy but lol I think everything is from the 1990s.. They really need to update the place but overall it is clean and beautiful besides the mold growing downstairs, and downstairs carpet having a stains and smelling awful, which probably needs to be gutted and removed because it is harboring mold as well. All these negative things I choose not to let ruin my stay. I’m looking forward to breakfast in the morning. I would halfway stay here again, but preferably in a unit or cabin that doesn’t have mold!

Easily 5 Stars. We chose Forest Hills as the site for a Church Leader Summit. 70 of us attended. The resort was great to work with. The group sales team was responsive and communicative. The facilities were perfect for us - we booked 4 lodges and used the conference center space for whole group gatherings. The rooms were well apportioned and comfortable. The mountain setting was wonderful - even in the dead of winter. The location is just far enough off the beaten path to be considered remote and yet downtown Dahlonega is only about 15 minutes away. Atlanta is less than an hour. The food was outstanding! Though this was a group trip, I would love to go back for a couple's getaway or a trip with friends.
