Hotel at a Glance: Four Columns Inn

Four Columns Inn has championed farm-to-table dining since the 1960s, even sourcing ingredients right from the property. Back then, the trout on the menu came from the inn’s pond and vegetables and herbs were culled from the land. The restaurant still maintains an organic garden today, and each morning’s omelets are made with eggs from the inn’s chickens.

  • Free breakfast with items such as fresh muffins and buttermilk pancakes
  • For chilly nights: Each guest room has a fireplace; king rooms also have whirlpool tubs.
  • Drink local: The tavern serves more than a dozen Vermont craft beers and ciders.
  • Best way to relax: any of the six types of massage available at the spa
  • Afternoon stroll: Hiking trails wind across 138 wooded acres.

Green Mountains, Vermont: Historical Towns Surrounded by Wilderness

Named for the layers of stately evergreens that carpet their slopes, the Green Mountains are a branch of the ancient Appalachians that stretches north to south through the center of Vermont. It’s a relatively even swath of rolling forests capped by a few summits that rise above the tree line, including Mount Mansfield, which tops off at 4,393 feet. The landscape is home to other rugged scenery, including alpine lakes, and more than 900 miles of mixed-use trails for biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing.

The mountains are punctuated by quaint Vermont villages where white church steeples border organic farms and creameries. At the midsection of Green Mountain National Forest is the city of Rutland, which plays host to summer outdoor concerts and the Vermont State Fair. About 70 miles north is Vermont’s largest city, Burlington, which is known for its breweries and boutiques.

The Four Columns Inn owes me $752 that they promised to pay but hasn't and won't return my calls The Four Columns Inn owes me $752 that it promised to pay but hasn't. I cancelled the reservation for two rooms because their on site restaurant (where we had made a reservation) had closed and the reason for staying at the inn was to have a nice celebration dinner at the restaurant on 10/5/23 after a 4 day leaf-peek hike in Vermont. A month before I googled and saw that the restaurant had closed I was contacted fairly quickly by the Inn and told that the place is under new management and that we would receive the refund, but that the previous owner had not transferred the deposit to the new owner and I should be patient. Now they don't return my calls.

Vague memories of glory days The hotel is clearly past its glory days. There is no-one on-site and it felt like a ghost town. We were sent for breakfast 15 miles away. The restaurant and bar are closed. The rooms should properly cost ~$120-140/night.

Wonderful Country Inn My wife and I went here for our honeymoon and decided to return to celebrate our 50th anniversary. The place has been remodeled and changed owners several times, but its charm remains. We stayed in the Sugar Maple room, which is the largest room and faces the front, with a spectacular view of the town green. The staff were great and appreciated our stories of the "old days." They serve a nice continental breakfast but don't currently have their own restaurant. That's unfortunate because in the past their restaurant was world class, but there are some good restaurants in nearby Brattleboro. Highly recommended for a getaway to a classic VT town, especially in leaf peeping season.
