Portland, Oregon: Quirky Riverfront City Known for Its City Parks

Extensive bikeways, edgy chefs, indie-rock bands, and progressive environmentalists—counterculture is almost a way of life in Portland. And it’s certainly a source of civic pride. Locals have adopted the slogan “Keep Portland Weird,” which is brandished on bumper stickers and in businesses all over the town. The city has always been a little ahead of its time; it was originally planned with strict urban-growth boundaries that left plenty of room for parks and other green spaces. Today, in new developments, shops are built at street level with apartments above them—following a European model that complements Portland’s slightly European, laid-back atmosphere.

The downtown area is a refreshing mix of the traditional and the offbeat: high-rise buildings are interspersed with clothing boutiques and restaurants serving sustainable cuisine. Streets here are narrow and the blocks are compact to encourage walking, which visitors are wont to do to take in the parks, plazas, and fountains. A popular place to hang out is Pioneer Courthouse Square, a 40,000-square-foot public space often referred to as “Portland’s living room.” In warmer months, the square hosts free shows and festivals, as does Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park, which was named 1 of 10 Great Public Spaces in America in 2012 by the American Planning Association.

Do not stay here. I will start by saying I am a Marriott Platinum Elite member (which means I spend a lot of nights away from home in Marriott properties.) This hotel is very misrepresented. First: booking and pictures show this property as part of Elmer’s restaurant with room service. NOT true. The diner does not offer room service, does not allow room charge and is not part of Marriott at all. Big deal since I booked two rooms for family staying 8 days, only to learn they couldn’t charge food to their room and there wasn’t anything nearby to eat. Plus the menu and offerings were much not true. Also, clearly states pillows are “foam” also not true. They are feather, I broke out into a rash as a result. Water? I took a bath and it was light yellow…. Checkin: Denise has zero business being in customer service. Awful experience, she told me “you aren’t eligible for an upgrade because you booked a double”… I showed her the app showing I was upgrade eligible and eventually she upgraded me. I asked for water and she informed me I could buy from panty?!?wtf? Platinum Elite. Free water. I spend a fortune at Marriott AND have the credit card??? Next morning I check out, politely mention issues and ask to be moved to another Marriott property (Which I moved us via app), good desk person am / manager was supposed to call me, did not. They obviously don’t care. Now at Marriott Courtyard down the road and very happy. Do NOT stay at Four Points - go straight to Courtyard! Worst Marriott in 5 years I have stayed at. Lied about room service, Lied about pool, lied about pillows, lied about “pillow top mattress” (barely a mattress) and absolutely awful checkin process for elite member with 2 rooms, one staying 8 nights! And manager can’t be bothered to call back a guest? Shameful experience and makes me rethink my loyalty to Marriott.

If there was free breakfast it would be a very nice Best Western I stayed here several years ago and it was, to be polite, underwhelming and not even close to Sheraton standards. The experience was such that I didn't come back until last weekend when a cancelled reservation elsewhere left me scrambling. To my pleasant surprise, it was considerably better. Still not up to the Sheraton name but, if this was a Best Western, it would be a very nice Best Western (though if it was there would be a free breakfast!). Certainly OK for a night or two.

Great! Our family of 5(4 adults/1 child) stayed here on Saturday night(5/11/24) while we were in town to visit family, had a small issue at check in when we were given a room with only one king size bed but that was taken care of quickly with no issues, we stayed in a 2 queen room & the room was a great size & we had a great stay, we ate breakfast at the Elmers restaurant on site after we checked out on Sunday morning and it too was really good!
