Gatlinburg, Tennessee: Charming Artists’ Village amid Great Smoky Mountains

Gatlinburg rests near Tennessee's eastern border, less than 3 miles from Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Here, you can hike more than 100 trails that wind past waterfalls and pioneer-era log cabins tucked deep within densely forested mountains. Or, take a bicycle ride on the 11-mile loop through Cades Cove, a broad valley of open meadows where you can see deer, black bears, and wild turkeys. Clingmans Dome, the park’s highest point of elevation at 6,643 feet, is a great place to catch the sunset.

Gatlinburg's main attraction is probably the artists' loop. It comprises more than 100 craft shops, studios, and cafés, and you can watch artisans as they hand weave baskets and whittle wooden figurines. Downtown Gatlinburg itself is a mountain village filled with old-fashioned ice-cream shops and boutiques selling housemade jams and decorative gewgaws.

Very Rundown I love the convenience this property has to downtown. It's a plus to be able to walk to Gatlinburg, however, the property is very rundown. They are making improvements, but I was here 8 months ago, and it actually looks worse instead of better. No work had been completed and after another winter the property is showing even more wear and tear. While our unit was clean, it was very dated and none of the showers drained.

Worst trip ever One chair in the unit was so black from filth that we would not touch it. We were told we would be booked on the creek of we checked in on Friday, another lie. The resort is so run down now. I purchased 30 years ago and I loved going there then. The elevators are scarry and stink. I was appalled at how they have let this resort decline.

Needs to be said. For starters the front desk were not very friendly ( i later found out it was front the manager) they then sent me to another office ,which I will have to say was the highlight of our stay. I went by the "welcome center" use this term loosely neither of the ladies I spoke with were friendly and had no clue . But we made a point to stop a see the dynamic duo in the concierge office. Thank Miss. Taylor and Mrs. Denise we will be in touch on our next visit.
