Erie, Pennsylvania: Wine Country and 19th-Century Mansions

Pennsylvania’s fourth-largest city, Erie, is a bustling place where around 100,000 people live on the shores of enormous Lake Erie. It flourished in the Gilded Age, so don’t miss a visit to Millionaires Row, a section of West Sixth Street lined with 19th-century Victorian mansions. At night, leave the Victorian era behind in favor of the Roaring Twenties and see a show at the ornate 1929 Warner Theatre downtown. It’s home to both the Erie Philharmonic and Lake Erie Ballet.

In the region surrounding Erie, you can drive along the Lake Erie Chautauqua Wine Trail for more than 50 miles of scenic vineyards, rolling hills, and 24 wineries pouring everything from classic European wines like merlot to local varietals like delaware and niagara. Another major attraction is Presque Isle State Park, a National Natural Landmark full of trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing and beautiful frozen vistas created by icy waves crashing and freezing to form ice dunes.

Cozy, Clean & Affordable Surprised to find this nice hotel at the last minute. Clean, comfortable, updated, with a cozy charm. Family run with helpful staff providing dining and entertainment options nearby. A great option to avoid pricier hotels along the lake, but still less than a 10 minute drive to the bay.

Hidden gem This hotel is a hidden gem. It is very clean with a friendly atmosphere. It is a family owned business and the entire staff was wonderful and helpful. All the rooms are as shown in the pictures on the website. The pool is the perfect size to relax and enjoy the weather. This will definitely be our go to place from now on as we usually travel to Erie 3 to 4 times a year.

Overall I would go back again :-) Room was clean and floor clean... bathroom, bedding and floors were updated from older photos on this review site - I slept well. The only issue I had was the adjoining locked door that went to another room I could hear the conversation of the mother and kids next door- while in the room - I would like to have seen some pretty flowers out front like in some of the other photos posted here but there weren't any from what I remember. I can't comment on the pool as I didn't use it at all but there were people enjoying it. Very friendly managers - keep in mind they do live on the property as you can sometimes hear family while getting continental breakfast, checking in, etc. I like nice people though and they are, the managers. The continental breakfast was Bananas, brownies, pastries, granola bars, hot water for tea and coffee and juice. Bed was comfortable and clean as well as comfortable pillows. Hot rooms in breakfast area until AC is turned on and a room to room interior window opened. Then it cooled off and was nice. Overall I enjoyed my stay and would go back and stay again. :-)

Great Old-school Option We visit Erie annually and usually stay in one of the newer hotels outside the city or in an AirBnb. This year we needed something close to Presque Isle. It's a well maintained older property. All of the staff were very kind and welcoming. Would stay here again and would recommend to others.

Don’t make the same mistake I did - you get what you pay for. I feel the need to write this review because I was wrongly informed by the first few reviews on this page for the Glass House Inn and I don’t want anyone else to make the same mistake we did. We made last minute trip to Presque Isle over the holiday weekend but I didn’t want to spend $400-$500 on a one night hotel stay. I didn’t a lot of research on our drive from Pittsburgh and a lot of other rooms were around $300. I found this Inn and read the first few reviews that were from within the past month on trip advisor, it had a great price, AND free breakfast?! Booked. But I should’ve kept reading reviews as they wrote what I experienced. Upon arrival, all was fine. The lobby had a pretty bad smell but I figured I wouldn’t be spending any time there so it would be fine. Entering the room we thought it was slightly outdated but it was no big deal for us. We aren’t fancy. The bathroom was updated and beautiful. As we got settled I noticed my daughter’s feet were BLACK on the bottom but figured she must’ve been out on the sidewalk without shoes until I looked at all of our feet and they were filthy. I got some paper towels and wiped the floor and my wipe came up black. So I put soap and hot water in the garbage can and wiped the floors. I attached a screen shot of the water as I dumped it out. It was foul. Stray hair everywhere. I did it a second time with fresh water and it still came back brown. It was like they failed to clean the floors EVER. Under the bed was a scary sight. The air conditioner was loud and rattled all night regardless of settings and temp. Mind you it was 90 degrees so we couldn’t go without but it kept us up all night. I wish I could upload the video I took of it of it’s noise. The blankets and sheets were so thin. The beds weren’t attached to the headboards so they kept moving about every time you moved in bed. The mattress covers were completely stained. Even some of the towels had big weird stains. Most importantly, the pool has no lock. We travel with small children. Water safety is very important to us. There is no shallow end in the pool. It goes from stairs to 4.5ft which I guess is my fault for not reading and just assuming it was a gradual slope. Luckily my kids are good swimmers but it took them by surprise. But no lock on the pool gate + no shallow end is not a combination and I feel the need to warn someone! Went to get ice at 10pm in the lobby and the owner? Someone was walking around barefoot. Breakfast wasn’t a typical continental breakfast. Cold cereal, fruit, homemade brownies and rice krispy treats. Dunkin is 1 block away luckily. I made no complains because I am not the person. I paid for the room and I was going to spend the night but I just want to warn others. Spend the extra $100 and get a great breakfast, guaranteed cleanliness, a better air system, and a safe pool.
