Gatlinburg, Tennessee: Charming Artists’ Village amid Great Smoky Mountains

Gatlinburg rests near Tennessee’s eastern border, less than 3 miles from Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Here, you can hike more than 100 trails that wind past waterfalls and pioneer-era log cabins tucked deep within densely forested mountains. Or, take a bicycle ride on the 11-mile loop through Cades Cove, a broad valley of open meadows where you can see deer, black bears, and wild turkeys. Clingmans Dome, the park’s highest point of elevation at 6,643 feet, is a great place to catch the sunset.

Gatlinburg’s main attraction is probably the artists’ loop. It comprises more than 100 craft shops, studios, and cafés, and you can watch artisans as they hand weave baskets and whittle wooden figurines. Downtown Gatlinburg itself is a mountain village filled with old-fashioned ice-cream shops and boutiques selling housemade jams and decorative gewgaws.

The hotel was amazing. The first room was not so great, We brought the issues we had with the room respectfully to management before we left to explore for the day. When we got back, they had a new room for us in the newer part of the hotel. Huge upgrade, and they were so kind. The breakfast was great, and fresh every day.

Convention trip Hotel is well run and inexpensive for the area. The rooms are clean and good housekeeping services every day and working ice machine close by. Hotel restaurant was reasonably priced and we ate breakfast each day at a charge and several dinners there. That was very handy as we came for a convention and sightseeing. This is our 3rd time to stay here and the renovations are making the place more attractive. The bathrooms are small but serviceable. Plenty of soap, toiletries and fresh towels.

A True Gem! The Glenstone lodge is a gem!!! Great welcoming and accommodating staff. Indoor and outdoor pool. Walk into town or to the community center. This hotel has a huge pavilion great for weddings or family reunions. And it’s on a stream. I will definetly be back!!!

Hotel needs some TLC and attention. I want to start by saying that the staff is absolutely AMAZING and very helpful! Also, beds were some of the most comfortable beds we've had at a hotel! Now, sadly there were quite a few negatives. The hotel is in massive need of an overhaul. The pictures that they have on the website are clearly photo edited. While the pictures do show the spaces as a whole accurately it's very edited and not nearly was as well kept as the pictures show. Our kids loved the pool so that was nice however it was difficult to use knowing how unattended things are (dirty, dated). The loungers in the website photos don't exist, instead there are some chairs with very dirty, plastic cushions. Then there were the rooms. Sorry to sound like I'm complaining so much but the furniture was very beat up, the rooms do not have safes, there is rust on pretty much everything that is metal and you can tell they tried to make it look updated (painting, bed sheets, etc) but sadly it was not nearly enough. It really needs TLC. It has such potential but they need to make some changes. We honestly contemplated asking for a refund upon getting into our room but then decided to just deal with it. In my husbands words (he's much more easy going than me) he said, "It's fine". He however immediately noticed that our door had a few inch gap under neath and was concerned what little creatures might come in as they do not close the outside doors on the hotel so you get a lot of visitors lol. I will say when we asked the front desk about the door they did have "maintenance" come and put a door stop over the bottom. In regards to location, its quite a bit further of a walk to the main drag downtown than is led to believe. I want to end with saying this is the first review I've ever written about a hotel and we travel a lot. Typically we stay in chain hotels but wanted to try a family owned hotel to have that personalized experience but next time we'll stick with the chain. I hope someone else finds this review helpful.
