Hotel at a Glance: Golden Beach Resort
Golden Beach Resort is set amid some picturesque views on the shores of Rice Lake, but there’s much more to do at the resort than just take in the scenery. Guests can fish off the end of a pier, or play a game of beach volleyball in the summer sun. This deal also includes a kayak or canoe rental, so you can paddle through the lake to spot local waterfowl, or watch fish darting beneath the surface. After a day of adventure, you can make yourself at home with a meal at the family-owned resort’s restaurant, or retire to your condo suite or cottage for a peaceful night’s rest.
- Tucked-away lodgings: Harbourfront condos suites feature fireplaces and private balconies that offer a front-row seat for the sunset. The cottages have similar amenities, but are a little roomier.
- Dockside dining: Munch on shrimp po’ boys and blackened salmon at Boathouse Cafe, where you can redeem this deal’s dining credit. The restaurant serves breakfast items all day long.
- Cool off in the sparkling outdoor pool while youngsters play on the colorful splash pad.
- Kayaks and canoes are available for you to take out on the lake. You can also paddle an inflatable boat, or fish off the end of the pier.
Rice Lake, Ontario: Muskie Fishing and Ancient Burial Mounds Outside Toronto
Located a scenic drive north of Toronto, Rice Lake got its name from the wild rice that once grew on its shores. The freshwater lake, which stretches for 20 scenic miles near eastern Canada’s New York border, is still a large part of the area’s culture. Anglers come from the local towns nearby and visit the lake year-round to cast out for bluegill, perch, and muskie, among other freshwater fish. In cooler months, boats and pontoons retire for the winter, and ice fishing becomes a popular pastime.
On land, you can hike through Serpent Mounds Park to see burial mounds of ancient First Nation’s peoples, or go birdwatching near the shore to spot blue heron and even the occasional bald eagle.
