Providence, Rhode Island: Historical Haven for Foodies and Arts Enthusiasts

Home to Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, and Rhode Island School of Design (or RISD) among other schools, Providence is known as an educational hub. But with an active arts scene, the city has more recently been called “The Creative Capital.” Downtown, you’ll find the arts-and-theater district, where galleries and vibrant storefront displays line the streets. Stagecraft thrives at the Tony Award–winning Trinity Repertory Company, and nearby, the Providence Performing Arts Center hosts touring Broadway shows.

The city's restaurant scene rivals the arts scene in its creativity and local enthusiasm, from the enclave of Italian eateries on Federal Hill to the delis downtown. Local chefs often draw from the regional farms bordering the city for their culinary creations; many gather downtown to shop at the farmers' market.

Brides and weddings beware While this hotel and its historic charm are beautiful, we were disappointed with the lack of service and hospitality. We stayed for two nights for our wedding and planned to take photos in the lobby. Apparently, the hotel has changed its policy and no longer allows professional photos in their space without a prior booking and a $500 fee. I did not see this notice clearly posted on their website and this turned into a unfortunate surprise on our wedding day. Once I was informed of this policy I simply told the front desk it was no problem and to charge my card on file. They gave me such a hard time and said I needed to go through the sales department prior. Keep in mind, the space we wanted to use was available and we were willing to pay but the staff was refusing to make the sale. After much time wasted, my mother ended up convincing the staff to make the sale and allow us to photograph. For a higher end hotel in the city, the fact that we booked a suite for two nights, and that I was standing there in my wedding gown and received zero empathy was shockingly disappointing. This hotel should strongly consider having posted notices throughout the space making this bizarre policy clear. In addition to this lack of hospitality, the premiere suite did not live up to the name. The kitchenette provided no glassware and overall the room was lacking amenities. Finally, the parking garage did not connect to the hotel which made for more hassle in the rain and wind. This combined with the after hours access issue (despite having the room barcode pass), we were unable to use the elevator to get to our car and had to walk up the ramp. What a nightmare from an accessibility perspective! Again, beautiful space but many bumps in the road and lack of hospitality.

Not a good value for your money The hotel was fine. Nicely run. Clean. Centrally located. Pretty decor. A bit quirky (ie blue teddy bear light). But for value for the money..... REALLY POOR. Once you added taxes, my room was just shy of $400. What did I get for that? Parking? oh no, that's not their garage - add $37 per day. Breakfast? Oh no, that's not their restaurant but there are places nearby. Spacious room? not really. I booked through booking.com so probably got the smallest room in the hotel. Early check in? Nope 4pm so I had to hustle to check in before my evening event. And everyone was there at 4 so it was a bit of a line. I ended up feeling resentful of the money spent and thus did not enjoy my stay. But there was nothing wrong with the hotel.

Not my cup of tea. I don’t think we would stay here again. The hotel is near the bus station and 7-11 that was not my favorite location. The downstairs was weirdly dark. The room was wonderful and large with 2 king beds. I would stay here again because I felt it was over priced for the location.
