Traverse City, Michigan: Charming Cherry Capital of the World

One of USA Today’s 10 Great Places for Local Wines, Traverse City draws visitors year-round with its fine rieslings made from grapes grown on the fertile Old Mission Peninsula. The proclaimed “Cherry Capital of the World,” tucked between the pinky and ring finger on the hand-shaped Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is bordered by scenic Grand Traverse Bay to the north and the sprawling Traverse City State Forest Area to the east.

The town’s downtown and waterfront thrive with gourmet restaurants and landmarks such as the State Theatre, a restored art-house cinema built in 1949; drop by for the $0.25 Saturday-morning matinee. A drive north up the Old Mission Peninsula eventually ends at the whitewashed Mission Point Lighthouse, a landmark constructed in 1870.

This is a very nice hotel. Clean, spacious, comfortable. Good service, nice, light breakfast. Right on the beach. When we were there, beginning of May, it was quiet and peaceful. Not far to downtown Traverse. Highly recommend this hotel. Watch for groupons for great deals!

Room was not what advertised- very tiny and disappointing We booked two days through Hotels.com. The picture used to advertise the room looked like a room we had before and we had enjoyed that stay. However that was not the room we were given. This time the room was extremely small-barely big enough for the king sized bed. We had no place to put our suit case. You had to stand sideways to get in and out of the bed on one side. The distance from wall to bed was the length of a baseball cap! In addition, it was an adjourning room and the door to the other room did not have a lock. That door was down a short hall to the bathroom and they had a tiny table shoved up against it. Like that would stop someone from coming through. We NEVER would have booked that room if we had known how small it was. We paid a lot of money for a storage closet. We could have gone elsewhere and had a much nicer room for what we paid. The hotel texted me and asked if everything was okay. I told them no and why, but we never heard back from them. It was our anniversary and we did not want to ruin it with complaining, so we just had fun anyway. But we felt cheated that the room was so tiny. That is the last time we will stay there.

Pretty nice The hotel itself is right on the beach as the name would imply. Our room was very clean and all staff we encountered were friendly. We had a ground floor room so we were able to walk right out onto the beach from our patio area, so that was nice as well. Bed was comfy and the place seemed well-kept overall. We would consider staying here again if in the area.

We can always count on The Grand Beach! We have been coming to The Grand Beach for years and have never been disapponted. We have not traveled for over a year because of Covid. As soon as we were fully vaccinated we planned a short trip and knew we would be safe at The Grand Beach. We always get a room on the second floor with a view of The Grand Traverse Bay. Our room has a King Bed with a couch. The room is spacious and great for relaxing after a long day enjoying the area. There are coffee pots in the rooms. A spacious walk in tiled shower along with numerous places to charge your phone. There is a small table with two chairs in your room. There are two chairs and a small table on the balcony where you can enjoy the view and have a relaxing drink if the weather is nice. (Chairs could be more comfortable out on balcony). The king bed is so....comfortable. In all the years we have been coming here we have been very happy with the beds. Normally this hotel has a great breakfast buffet. Because of covid that has changed. When you check in they give you a limited menu of prepackaged food. You turn in your choices the night before and they will deliver your meal in the morning. Our breakfast was delivered promptly. We did not use the pool because I have to be very careful coming in contact with people, but I glanced at the pool and it was as clean and inviting as always. This is a 3 story hotel. We always stay on the second floor. I would suggest carrying ear plugs in your suitcase in case you need them. The people above us were very active. They also got an early start in the am. (6pm). We have been coming to this hotel for 20 years. There are so many choices of hotels in the area. We have stayed at others, but always come back to the Grand Beach because we can count on a clean comfortable room. If I have any complaint, it would be that because we were unable to travel during the worst of covid, we fell off of receiving the preferred rate. I was told I have to sign up again for their preferred rate. After 20 years, I am not feeling too "preferred" right now.
