Dubuque, Iowa: Pastoral Charm Along the Mississippi River

Located along the Mississippi River in eastern Iowa, just across the Wisconsin border, Dubuque’s natural setting makes it ideal for picturesque hikes such as Heritage Trail, a 26-mile mountain trek. The trail links Dubuque with Dyersville, the site where Field of Dreams was filmed. A stroll along the Port of Dubuque’s riverwalk goes past Victorian architecture, eclectic sculptures by local artists, and the city’s iconic clock tower.

For a history-centered day trip, take a scenic 20-mile drive east of the river to the charming town of Galena, Illinois, where you’ll find wineries, antiques stores, and blacksmith shops. The Ulysses S. Grant Home sits on a hill overlooking the town. The 18th president and Union general was given this Italianate house upon his triumphant return to his hometown after the Civil War ended in 1865.

Children loved it - I saw issues. I'm not making excuses, but after covid(?) every facility is struggling. The hotel is run down. The water park is very rusty and the extra spray things were not working. We did not get maid service. The water in bathtub would not turn off completely. No fan in the bathroom. The air conditioner in the room could not be set on constant fan so it turns on and of all night long. If you want ice it's only available on 3rd and 7th floors. The breakfast was very nice only you must clean and wash your own table if you want to sit at a table after someone else used it. With all these negatives, I had 4 children with me and all they wanted to do is have fun which they did. Adults will notice a lot of issues, but not the children.

I really wish I could give this a better review This has been one of our go to quick weekend family outings for about 10 years now. This trip has been less than stellar. Most families come here for the waterpark however, on this occasion, only part of the waterpark was able to be used. There was one pool closed. I understand things breakdown, and need maintenance. The lazy river was unusable, as well as the main waterslide, simply because the waterpark doesn’t have inner tubes available for people to use. When we first arrived it was fine, however with a few hours almost every tube in waterpark was deflated. Those that had a working tube refused to give them up. I asked two different lifeguards if they could please just try to inflate them and I was told no because they have to have someone in the back do it and there was no one available. One lifeguard told me they were hoping to get a shipment in soon. But what good does that do the guests who paid to be here on this day? Dinner at Tony Roma’s as usual. My husband enjoyed his meal. My steak was a bit tough. My biggest complaint is year after year the flies in the restaurant are horrendous. And yes, I know my bad that I keep eating there. It’s one of those things I forget about until we are seated and they start swarming! I hope this property can correct their issues and get back to the place that we have enjoyed for so long!

Our grandchild had a wonderful time! Located on the shores of the Mississippi River. We attended the Little People Association regional meeting here. This was our first visit. The resort includes a water park, arcade and the Tony Roma restaurant. Our room was typical with a queen size bed. The bathroom shower/tub did not have any grab bars. Breakfast highlight was the donut hole pastry. We did not notice any waffle maker, yogurt, nor hard -boiled eggs. The only bread was white. Seating was limited. The resort is across the plaza from the Diamond Jo Casino. It is also near other attractions such as the National MIss. River Museum.
